Wow what a strong start! This has some serious old school wuxia charm with some modern flavour as well. I was hooked from scene 1 and this probably the first time in a Wuxia where I feel more slowly introduced to clans and sects and I am following along very well. The two leads are developing a nice bond already and I’m enjoying watching them but credit is due to the fight choreo. My gosh it’s stylish, fluid, introduces martial arts styles well and at a decent length for each situation to not be over too quickly and anti climatic but also not too long that you’re yawning.
7.1? Is this really that bad, or just the usual MDL rating nonsense?
No not at all. In fact it’s quite watchable. I wouldn’t say it was a top tier show but for a smaller budget mini drama it’s oddly bingable. I was caught up in just one day!
I find this very mid tier on many technical and acting levels but i’m strangely drawn to it. You’re right it could be script and pacing that’s doing it.
Probably the most complex and interesting characters for me are the two spy characters. I enjoy any time they are on screen.
It’s a decent show to watch during a dry spell in usual content. Its not wow but it’s not awful. Just switch off your brain and you’ll be fine. Strangely bingeable compared to either mini dramas i’ve watched.
I really cried during this drama. It's been a long time since I cried during a drama like this. The words, the…
Yeah Im the same. Its been ages since I cried this much for a cdrama. A real masterclass acting performance that DX’s death I was actually balling my eyes out in pain and grief. I felt the loss and grief profoundly for He Simu and the ending at the end of ep 40 made the more sense to me and more satisfying if we are strongly following the laws of life and death being just a part of life and so him coming back as a little jellyfish by her side was so beautiful and tender and comforting in a way.
I am not over this pair yet and I will remember this show for a long time.
It’s utterly heartbreaking and his death broke me. I was a sobbing mess for ages. Kudos to the actors and creative team for the beautiful layered slow burn romance that packs such a punch at the end. You’re right it’s an unforgettable love story that will stay with me for ages.
I am not okay. Duan Xu’s death broke me. Like I was already a mess from the last few episodes but his last breath ripped my heart out. Even though I knew it was coming I wasn’t prepared to be that overwhelmed with grief.
I am now just staring at a wall processing the show. The ending was exactly as it needed to be and I will hold He Simu and Duan Xu’s love story with me for a long time.
Me: Well… we are down to one episode this week. What a great opportunity for you now to do life admin things - clean, gym, see friends and family or watch your other dramas you have paused. Then reward yourself with the new episode. Also me: Let’s use the time to watch hours and hours of POJ clips and then let’s watch those clips again. Oh look - new episode!
I have to say that opening scene on the bridge in ep 17 is one the best directed and performed scenes I’ve ever seen. The tension, the passion, the longing. It was so atmospheric and very well written.
And then ep18 hit me so hard as the darkest point of the show - I knew something terrible had to happen for our FL to get to the next stage of the story but that Sui brother is just pure evil. That shot of him from behind so casual with spear over his shoulder - the director knows how to show villains and darkness as well as then switching to light and beautiful when that sun came out for FL and Mrs Zhao over the bridge.
This show is just blowing my mind how careful every shot and story beat is considered in this story.
‘I’m discussing the law with you, yet you’re set on framing me. If that’s the case, we’ll do it by my rules’ I want to see the moment the ML comes back with full force and strength to take down this so called ‘county magistrate’
This show is fantastic and so pretty!! Strong script with perfect pacing, beautiful cinematography, skilled direction, spot on chemistry and a show that just makes your heart happy. I am obsessed with this already and I get 35 more episodes of it. Every second is pure joy and I’m so glad it’s meeting my expectations.
May this show envelop us all in snow and romance and adventure so that we don’t even realise weeks of our lives have passed. May it have massive success and make new and old cdrama fans rejoice and celebrate together. And may our two leads carry us on a beautiful journey in working together and finding love.
