I am a little disappointed with how Shunsuke's storyline was handled. He just came back and there was no resolution whatsoever. It still feels like no-one is taking his concerns or problems seriously at all and nothing was fixed.
A comment on another site noted how Mokomi's "power" seems analogous to neurodiversity and I kind of see merit in that argument. Her power seems to be vaguely defined, less supernatural and more grounded. This, her behaviour and mannerisms make her character seem to be autism- or some other mental disability-coded (which can be problematic); the drama can be seen as exploring how families with neurodivergent relatives cope with it. For example, Shunsuke feels ignored and uncared for, the family for all this time tried to cover up Mokomi from society and just ignored whatever she had to say (mostly the mom) and they treat her like she's made of glass.
However, all of the other troubles with the family have to less to do with Mokomi and what she is and more with their personalities (Mom is too controlling, Dad is too weak and submissive, Grandpa is a borderline predator, Shunsuke messes up his life and then blames everyone else, etc.)
I used to find Shunsuke kinda creepy bc of the anonymous hate account he created to rant about his own family, the instability he showed when he sneaked off into the van, all the screaming and the hatred towards everyone in his life. But with just one episode, I feel very sympathetic towards him.
I don't agree with how he expressed how ignored and unloved he's felt all his life, but I definitely felt so bad for Shunsuke. But he is also is kinda mean towards people - the way he was rude to Kishida and how he dates Suzune but always treats her like she's annoying.
Grandpa continues to be sus af, with Mokomi's encouragement/approval. Honestly my only problem with this drama.
I mean, there's only a 3 year difference between Mokomi and Kishida but the way Grandpa is so proud of her for dating someone younger than her is so fucking creepy considering his own history...
This just aired yesterday (Mar 21 as I write this), so fansubs won't be so quick. And that's if any fansubber…
I misread it, I didn't realize it aired just yesterday, I thought it had aired a while back. I was just sad bc I thought noone would pick it up since a lot of these specials seemed to slip under the radar.
Honestly, this is still a good drama but there have just been a few missteps so far. I'm not really familiar with the screenwriter's other work.
Edit: this screenwriter also wrote for Shitteru Waifu? I loved that drama!
I don't think she's that upset with what happened with her brother. that plot line went nowhere
