Yeah, to make it more relatable, my benchmark for a female character who is supposed to be cold, calculating, manipulative, yet refined and elegant would be Madam Yu. Just look at how layered she is. Even the slightest movement of her eyes can make you think, “omg, What is she plotting this time?” There’s always something simmering underneath. Now that is great acting. And perfect for attentive viewers!

Not saying Fan Yake has a valid excuse for being evil, but her backstory feels much more compelling because her resentment is deep-rooted and has accumulated over the years. She has spent her whole life feeling second-tier, growing up beside Ting Fuyuan and constantly being reminded of everything she doesn’t have. So when she finally sees a chance to carve out her own bright path (or at least she thinks), you can at least understand where her stupid decision is coming from.
Commander Lu, on the other hand, barely has any relationship with the ML to even justify that level of jealousy. The ML isn’t even some high-ranking military figure whose position he would naturally envy. His jealousy just feels far more contrived and plot-driven.

It reminds me of a comment during Splendid Match when someone asked, “When did the FL even fall in love with the ML?” Because there were no signs at all. So many people replied, pointing out how tensed she became around him, the way she looked at him, her body language—and how obvious it was that she was already attracted to him from the first time she saw him.
So yeah, some viewers really do need everything spelled out line by line.

I love that Zhao Ling still has his core values intact. He doesn’t want a marriage just for mutual benefit — he wants the girl to genuinely love him. He doesn’t take shortcuts when it comes to something that matters to him.
