I’d say extend it to ep 9, that’s is where you will see the turning point. The ML does not have a lot of scenes in the first 10 episodes.

Btw we are on ep 25 at the moment and I anticipate once the couple officially get together that is where the political challenges begin.

What are you after? I’d say most viewers who enjoy this drama are here for the simmering romance between the main leads — the chemistry, tension, and slow burn. Plus, both the ML and FL feel like a breath of fresh air.

ML — a high-ranking official, mature, widowed, respectful, and gentle. Even after he falls for the FL, he is never pushy, never forces his way into her life, and never abuses his power. He respects her decisions and gives her space. He can be sly and shameless at times, but viewers actually love him for it 😊

And Ci Sha really elevates the role. Since he comes from a martial arts background, his overall image feels very different from the usual idol actors. He has this incredibly masculine aura and a deadly gaze. But once he falls in love, the way his eyes soften will absolutely melt you.

FL — young, beautiful, smart, and from a filthy rich family. Because of her father, she is cynical about marriage, but she remains level-headed and practical. I love how different she is from conventional female leads — never acting cute or dumb, never overly bubbly, and not doing the usual silly drunk scenes. She is calm, elegant, and emotionally steady.

Put the two together and they slowly become such a satisfying power couple. If these kinds of characters appeal to you, then this drama is definitely worth watching.

Now if you are after a deeper plot with heavy revenge arcs, hidden birth secrets, or intense political struggles, then I honestly don’t think this drama is for you. The romance and character dynamics are clearly the main selling point here.

It’s probably his first romantic male lead role and he admitted that although he had done kiss scene before it wasn’t much and he was really nervous this time since it’s one of their first shooting scenes. I am sure he will get better with more male lead roles lol

I also don’t understand why some people are so caught up over others hating Ye Xian’s character. We all know it’s just the character, and Winwin is doing a good job portraying him.

Meanwhile, people are constantly bashing Gu Lian, yet no one ever steps up to say that the actress is doing a great job.

Lol, we’re basically the nosy neighbors spreading gossip the very next day.

I think he cares for him and describe him as 知己 someone who understands her. But we know she cares for him but not in a romantic way. I think that is pretty obvious.

Love this. That’s actually why I could never fully enjoy The Sword and the Brocade even though people always compare it to A Splendid Match because both have mature MLs.

In Sword and Brocade, the FL hides too many things and keeps making decisions alone, which just creates endless misunderstandings. Instead of feeling emotionally connected, it became frustrating to watch, and I honestly could not finish it.

I think it was the ML’s way of giving the Ji family reassurance that he would not drag GJZ down with him if he ever became entangled in a dangerous political situation.

But as Ji Yao pointed out in Episode 25, even with the divorce papers in hand, he knows GJZ would never actually use them. No matter how bad things get, she would still choose to stand by her marriage.

And I love how GJZ answered that if she truly chooses to stay in the marriage despite everything, then the Ji family should be happy for her — because that would mean he really is a good husband worth standing beside.

I feel like winwin is strategically casted for this annoyingly sad character to stir some reactions and they are succeeding at it since winwin is being talked about in douyin, his engagement is even higher than ci sha! So it’s not so bad for winwin’s career .

I have not read the novel but i anticipate she will not. She will stick by his man for better or worse, that’s is my guess.

* My favorite scene of the episode was seeing Gu Jin Zhao still hesitating over whether she made the right decision accepting the marriage proposal, to the point that she needed to go see Chen Yan Yun late at night. And the moment she finally met CYY, saw his face, and looked into his eyes… she realized this gamble was worth taking.
* Finally confirmed that our green-flag Ji Yao cousin only has sibling love for Gu Jin Zhao. He is so supportive and even prepared a thick stack of cash for her dowry. Gosh, this guy is seriously cash rich.
* Gu Lian’s cousin is freaking toxic — jealous, insecure, and completely lacking substance and her mother still questioning why grandma is returning all the dowry to gu jing zhao, wow i am speechless but sadly this really exist in chinese culture!
