if u want only good stories then go read books why to watch dramas. imo this is not that bad story either
No. It's different medium. You can't compare.
If when I watch a drama, I don't hope for a good story, SO WHY ?
A screenplay is supposed to be a crazy good story on screen.
Without a good story, just look at painting.

The actors recite their lines so much that I feel like I'm watching a Taiwanese drama.
I forgot to mention the ultimate horror: the addition of unbearable little sound effects punctuating every "comical" gesture of the characters. Like those in variety shows.
Sssspop..... swchiiiiiiiz... plop.... sviizzzzzz.... wwwhuup... whhip..... schwiiiiii.
The aggressiveness of this drama against my intelligence is limitless.

This is perhaps the single best comment I've ever seen on MDL. An article in it's own right. I must agree whole…
I'm fully agree with you about Goblin influence. Any director watching this could think about the way to do something as sophisticated about visual magic.
Even if you disagree with the article about Sisyphus, I hope you still enjoyed the part about the drama history. ;-)

Thank you.
I make risky assumptions. But on the other hand the facts force me to do so, when I see what is obvious. I was trying to analyze objectively, but honestly, it's something very difficult.
As you mention, the commitment of the jTBC channel should not be underestimated. They know perfectly well that making SF dramas is difficult, and that the audience is not naturally favorable. They believed in this project and invested in it! They are professionals as well as people of integrity. If they chose this script, and even more so to make it their 10th anniversary, it is a decision weighed very heavily.
Indeed, time must play its part, as it was the case for other dramas of the same kind. It is not the kind of instant success. It spreads little by little in the other countries, as the broadcasting contracts go on.
I don't think all the points I've made will be persistent, but some will. I'm sure they will. You can't put Gun-Fu fights in a drama, in the same way as in movies, without it leaving an impact.

The pitch was really good. So, I jumped with pleasure in this drama.
After 20 minutes of episode one.........
Damn, it's so bad. All is already done before. All sound fake, artificial, boring.
I could say "outdated". Of course it's outdated.
But there is also so many outdated dramas that were very good.
If it's outdated, it's just outdated by taking the worst points of olders dramas, not the good ones.
Terrible bad acting, false crying scene, aarrrhhhhhh, I feel like someone drill my brain!!!
It even make me feel "Radio Romance" was good. At least, there is one of my favorite actress.

HAHA @ The K2. Wish ML had ended up with SFL though...
This gives me one more drama to motivate me, thank you!
Unfortunately, people don't really vote in the direction of the list.
Namely: the absolute bitch.
Actually, Mr Queen was voted, as if people were only voting for their favorite drama. The second female lead of the drama was one of the most innofensive I've seen.
My initial order is:
- Rooftop prince, Stairway to heaven, Temptation of wife, Moon embrace the sun.

Bravo for your first article. It's concise.
I've watched several dramas of this list, it would be too long to comment.
My favorite : The Penthouse.
Then SKY Castle and The World of the married.
Beyond evil : I didn't watched.

About dark drama : L.U.C.A.
The drama is known because there is many action, but I rarely watched something so violent.
Situations are harsh. Last episodes are very difficult to stand. Nightmare.

"That is not comedy."
I fear to try others dramas of this writer.
There is some case when crazy facial expressions work, when the drama is more balanced.
I think about "Incarnation of money". When the sidekick disguise as a madman to enter the psychiatric hospital. Here, he was damn funny. But I think it's because it's related to the plot and the situation, there is a reason behind, and the comedy stick to the story. When comedy come suddenly from nowhere, slapstick, people screaming, without any other support, it's so ulcerating.

You should take your comment back, there is nothing wrong in it.

For me sisyphus is the most kdrama i've ever seen in my life, the scenario of apocalypse and war are amazing,…
Hello, I understand that such a drama can make this effect. It happened to me too, for other dramas. It is indeed impressive. ;-)

For budget reasons, it is not possible to compare 365, which has a very different plot. However, within the limits of the budget, 365 makes the best of its possibilities. The filmography is beautiful, some sets like the Zian institute or the cliff path are perfect.

A time travel story must have a concept. And different stories of this kind have different concepts. Fortunately, otherwise we would always watch the same story. ;-)

Hello, thank for your long comment.

These are opinion articles, various ones at that, depending on whether people liked the drama or not. I already know pretty much what people say. Of course, there are contradictory opinions. For example, some people think that the romance is not emphasized enough. Others think the opposite. On one criticism you quote, the person is unable to envisage an open ending, in the same way some other people can't accept a sad ending. The ending was not rushed. There is just that 5 minutes at the end without explanation. Then we can think that what we saw before wasn't maybe what happened. We take a look at details of various scenes of the last episode, and see how it is connected to the very last end. Many great movies does often that.

I am not focusing on those points here. I am trying to observe objective facts. Even if it is difficult to avoid a part of opinion, and the whole article start with a risky assomption. For the script for example. Someone may say that the story is boring or confusing, and someone else that it is captivating. But what interests me is the complexity of writing such a story. The difficulty to structure it. Then, not necessarily the answer to all the phenomena, but the logic of cause and effect in the narrative. Also, the way the chronology of the story is built: the choice to regularly include scenes from the future. This reinforces the idea of the time bubble in which the past is defined according to the future and vice versa. This allows to create scenes of great emotional intensity, like the end of episode 8. As you can see, debating this will be the equivalent of redoing all the comments and analysis made since weeks, here, on soompi or on my favorite blog. I'm throwing in the towel on this one!

One of my theories about the ending also involves Camus' philosophy. Sisyphus was not connected to a specific character. See my last comment here:
https://mydramalist.com/discussions/sisyphus-the-myth/61243-the-ending-of-sisyphus-the-myth-spoilers
Giving access to another blog where this is explained further. (I have the same profile picture here and there). The main point is that Sisyphus makes peace with himself and accepts his absurd fate.

There is also the many explanations of this smart guy :

This is perhaps the single best comment I've ever seen on MDL. An article in it's own right. I must agree whole…
Hi, it's hard to say about the Baeksang Art Awards, because it changes every year. The previous years had a more or less proportionate mix of cable and non-cable dramas.
I have difficulties to understand what motivates the choice of the nominated dramas. My Unfamiliar Family has low ratings for a tVN drama. The other dramas too, but some of them were very successful on online platforms. As I didn't watched some of them, I'm even more in the unknow. Extracurricular has no rating since it's a Netlfix drama. But at least I watched it, and I liked the drama. However, not to the point of propelling it for awards.

I didn't have the space to mention Goblin, and I wasn't sure enough about the changes this drama brought in the way dramas are made. Also, end the list with a Sci-fi drama about time-travel was more revelant, related to the content of the article.
There are two possible tracks:
- The one you mention, the longer episodes. I didn't thought about that.
- The incredible direction. Regarding the aesthetic magic, and if I refer to the dramas of that time (within the limits of my knowledge), it is indeed a turning point. Since then, many dramas have tried to get up to the level. Such as Hotel de Luna. But also historical dramas which became much more refined in terms of image.
Regardless of my appreciation for the drama, I could also say while watching "Woo, there, they have put a lot of emphasis on the visual magic, I had never seen that before".

Hi, and thanks for the long comment. You should write an article instead of just posting this as a comment, because there is some material.

Note one thing, I specified in the article that I couldn't cover all the dramas that had influence, it would take a specialized article to do that. I only looked for dramas whose impact acts on the content, and the way of making dramas. You cite many examples of dramas that had an impact, but for other reasons, and other effects.

Taking for example "Good Doctor", dating from 2013. The influence is undeniable since this drama had a US remake (whose quality or interest I will not comment on). However, this drama did not change anything in the way of making dramas in 2013. There were other medical dramas before that, told in the same way. And after, nothing changed either.
It would require a more thorough research to know if this drama has changed the way of making dramas. Maybe by its theme, featuring an autistic person?

MDL ratings are not important in the historical approach of kdramas. Sandglass dates from 1995, there is no reason to say that today, this drama has any influence for the current viewers, or those of this site. What is important is the turning point that it represented at that date, in Korea, and the changes that were introduced in the drama itself. Changes that were then perpetuated, for some of them.

An important point you raise is that today, the changes in content and the way to make a drama is not only dependent on the Korean market, but on how Hallyu can conquer the world.
There is a lot of feedback from international and online platforms. Sometimes it is hardly believable. The King Eternal Monarch drama was even less successful than Sisyphus in the official ratings. This drama was finally very successful, regardless of my and MDL's opinions, which were mostly negative. Sisyphus follows exactly the same way. With relatively more acceptable ratings (for a cable channel), and even higher ratings on online platforms. First on Netflix in Korea, and Top 10 in most Asian countries. Time is taking its toll, as the drama is marketed more widely.

If I took the risk to write this hypothetical article, it's because some points immediately shocked my attention. In particular the big show and the fight scenes. I could see "Woo, I've never seen this before, even in the action drama Vagabond, this is huge!". From there, I can easily imagine that it will have an impact (on the way to make a drama), especially since it matches a lot of expectations internationally.

Thanks for this article!I kept thinking about a minute, whether to comment or not. I guess there are some things…
Woo! You wrote the draft of a real review for the drama.
I hope you will write it in the reviews.

You mention an interesting point, which I now call "the author's contract". Quickly, as a viewer, I decide on this. Do I accept this contract or not? What does the author want to tell and how? I focus on that rather than on getting what I want.

If there are points that I can't live with, I probably won't accept the contract. Take a drama like Hospital Playlist, I can't accept. There are issues that I can't overcome, while other viewers accept the contract, and get past that. Then they can enjoy the drama later.

On Sisyphus, I wanted a more visceral story first, like Kairos. It was a mistake to want anything. It was necessary to wait for the vision of the authors, who propose a lighter content, a bit like Crash Landing On You. Once I understood the vision of the writers, I was able to weigh the interesting points of the drama, which outweighed the few flaws that could be found.
Rather than interpreting some of the mysteries as plot holes, I preferred to decipher the story based on the elements provided. This was indeed the right way to react, since finally, the odd elements have an explanation, given later in the story.

I loved reading this article! it was really interesting to see how some dramas really changed the fabric of drama…
Thanks. Except for Winter Sonata, I've watched all the dramas on this list, which I've seen commented on a lot elsewhere under the aspects mentioned in the article. Hopefully I didn't make a mistake for some of them. The historical continuity is hard to decipher.

this was an okay series. Its not as horrible as viewers are making it out to be esp by kdrama scifi standards.…
Hi! Nice to meet you here, as I did in the comments of the drama. How can I forget someone who has Chow Yun Fat as an icon, when I'm a fan of action movies, especially Asian ones? ^^
It's possible that we discussed about quantum physics. I've been very interested in this field. Whether it's intrication phenomena, experiments like Alain Aspect's, or the nature of the vacuum. These are difficult concepts to imagine. A famous physicist in this field (I forget his name) said roughly: If you can't understand quantum physics, it's normal, neither can we.
