I think it ist paradoxical when people who rated this with 1/10 still watched it until the end. Idk about you…
I think what is happening is this.
People keep watching, they hate it, but they keep giving the show chances hoping that each episode will get better. Next episode comes, it doesn't get better, but these audience keep giving the show multiple chances, hoping against hope the ending will somehow magically save all the mistakes.
Then the ending comes, and it becomes the worst episode of the series.
Then the ratings come. The problem lies in people giving a show multiple chances, then getting disappointed when the show keeps getting worse and worse.
Yeah, it was nice discussing the show with you as well. And yeah, I will respect your opinion, as in any Kdrama,…
I haven't watched IC, sorry, but i'm a big park seo joon fan, so I assume it couldn't have been that bad. I heard from other posters that it lost its lustre near the end.
I'm more curious about ROY. For a TVN show, it actually had viewer rating of 10%, that is double of Start Up. But it's rated quite low on MDL, even though I heard the starting episodes were amazing. I wonder why people rated it so low? Sounds like the same story of Start Up, amazing start disappointing finish.
Thank you! Yes I noticed a lot of people kept saying the low reviews were because of the ships and love triangle,…
Actually, even I will admit the hype and buzz of TKEM was huge. I never understood it. But LMH gained like 6-7M IG followers after it.
I never understood the draw of LMH, but I heard his fan army is one of the most zealous of all male actors.
But yeah the buzz on Start Up has been amazing, and most of that has been KSH. Even for korean netizens, most of the talk has been about KSH. It's good for him. But as we saw in TKEM, high buzz doesn't equate to quality drama. But good for the careers of the cast though to get more recognition.
There is actually an interview with Suzy and NJH where they talk about how they don't like NDS character, someone posted a link for it, but i'm not sure where it is.
TKEM's biggest problem was the plot, there were too many plot holes, and it was confusing. The romantic scenes would rival Start UP in how cringy it was. And the chemistry of LMH and KGE was non existent. Plus add to the fact that LMH is just not a great actor.
NDS and SDM actually have a parallel scene that proves without a doubt they are MFEO.
NDS punches HJP, and then he uses Grandma blindness, someone that HJP loves very much to get HJP to help him.
SDM keeps competing with WIJ, and even taunt her multiple times, and then she uses the story/memory of the father that WIJ loves very much, so that WIJ will hire SDM.
Coincidence? I don't think so.
If this isn't true love, I don't know what is. I don't know if I want to share a world where I cannot use someone's memories and emotions against them to get what I want.
Hello. Interesting statistic! Why did you group 1-6 together? Let's try 1/10, since a hater would pick that instead.Percentage…
It doesn't really work that way. If you invalidated 1/10, you will also need to invalidate 10/10 because this is the fallacy of double standards. In my opinion all the ratings are valid, I won't say one rating is more "Real", while others are "False". That is why I respect whatever the average ratings end up to be, because I think the MDL website does a good job of aggregating actual ratings, and the number of haters vs the stans even each other out in the end. In this particular case, it even looks like the Stans are heavily manipulating the stats.
I mean if we go even further and compare this to other shows, of other years, I'm sure the bias would even be more obvious. For example, I randomly chose a Rom-com that I know is beloved by many, "You who came from the stars" . It is rated 8.6 by 48,566 users. And the 10/10 ratings is 26%. Do you see my point here? And this show is like almost universally loved, that it has spawned at least 2 remakes. And i'm sure even you will admit this is a better show than Start Up.
And, you'll notice that most of these shows have a rating of 11-13% for their 10/10 which seems the norm. Then you have two outliers, Start Up and The King Eternal, who despite rating below 8.0/10 have double the average 10/10 compared to it's contemporaries.
And we know how much negativity there has been for TKEM on MDL, and yet it has 20% 10/10? Makes you question it, since the actual ratings of the show is below 8. The same thing can be said for Start Up, 24% 10/10 ratings is a little bit troubling. This is the signs of overrated dramas IMO.
And from 10 - 9.5 there is a 14% drop in number of ratings. If anything, these advanced just shows me that the show should be rated below 7.9, but a dedicated group of people are voting this all 10's in hope that the ratings will go higher.
After discussing with a fellow Stat geek. It appears that for all shows in 2020 that average a 7-8 ratings. The average number of people voting 10/10 in the ratings is approximately 13%.
There are two outliers to this though, The King Eternal Monarch and Start Up.
Start Up has 24% of ratings being 10/10, while TKEM has 20% of ratings being 10/10. And yet both of these shows are rated at 7.9. Keep in mind the average for other 2020 shows rated 7-8 stars is 13%.
I think this just shows that these shows are these two shows are being artificially propped up to have higher than deserve ratings.
In comparison, You Who Came From the Stars, which is rated 8.6 only has 26% 10/10 ratings.
Kind of makes you think, who is really manipulating the reviews :)
I don't really care, I just think it's funny, with all the accusations out there.
Hello. Interesting statistic! Why did you group 1-6 together? Let's try 1/10, since a hater would pick that instead.Percentage…
Do I have you permission to copy your post into my discussion thread to shed more light into the ratings of Start Up? You brought up some interesting points about the "Hater" ratings I think more people would like to see.
Hello. Interesting statistic! Why did you group 1-6 together? Let's try 1/10, since a hater would pick that instead.Percentage…
Well for two reasons.
1. Another poster used that as a parameter for people rating the show low.
2. MDL users consider ratings below 6 to be negative reviews, while those above 7 are considered neutral to positive reviews.
3. The sampling for 1/10 is too small, and thus don't provide an accurate measure of the "Hater" metric. I chose 1-6/10 because the average comes out to above 10%
Ok, using those new parameters, is 4% of 4,946 reviews is approximately 198 users. This is not enough of a sample size. I wanted to aim for at least 10% of ratings to get a more accurate assessmen.
Also keep in mind, the MDL "Cleanse" happened before the show ended, so i'm sure those numbers will bump up when the second "Cleanse" happens. Regardless if you bump down the numbers back to 1-2%, it's not going to affect the overall ratings too much, maybe bump it up .1 more, if ever.
Now you made me want to dig deeper. If 1/10 of is considered the rating "Haters" will choose, then we can assume 10/10 is the rating "Anti Hater" or "Stans" would choose. So let us review those ratings to see both sides of the coin.
Start-Up - 24% The King: Eternal Monarch - 20% Record of Youth - 11% Oh My Baby - 10-% Dinner Mate - 11% Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol - 14% The Game: Towards Zero - 12% Forest - 12% Backstreet Rookie - 15% The School Nurse Files - 8% Meow, the Secret Boy - 11% Rugal - 12%
Hmm, after looking at these numbers a "Cleanse" would actually bump this show lower as we approach the average? It seems that Start Up, not only has the most "Hater" ratings, but the most "Stan" ratings as well.
I suggest we bring both the "Hater" and "Stan" ratings closer to the average.
The average of the "Hater" rating is 1.5, so we will calculate 2.5% of ratings of 4,936 users, which means we will remove 123 user votes.
The average of the "Stan" rating is 13% so we deduct that from 24% and we get 11%. 11% of ratings = 542 user votes removed.
It seems to me that the "Stan" ratings are actually more influential than the "Hater" ratings. How much more effective? we get 542/123 = 440% more effective in changing the ratings.
I enjoyed this review, but I have differing opinions from you. I really think this is a matter of interpretation…
Yeah, it was nice discussing the show with you as well.
And yeah, I will respect your opinion, as in any Kdrama, people's experience will vary. The show Start Up thematically attacked a lot of the principles I held dear, and that's why I could not relate with anything that was happening. And I think a lot of people's enjoyment when watching Kdrama is by how much they can relate with it. And while other people are ok to ignore plot holes, they are my biggest pet peeve.
I think I rated TKEM around a 3 or something, I forget :) No matter how bad a show is, nothing deserves a 1, its disrespectful to the actors and actresses. For their effort alone, they get a 3 from me.
Feel free to message me when you've written your review, I'll take a look at it :)
Thank you! Yes I noticed a lot of people kept saying the low reviews were because of the ships and love triangle,…
I agree, I thought Start Up was a superior show to TKEM, but never underestimate the love of LMH stans, they are amazingly resilient. I remember they were making 4-5 new accounts a day trying to write new positive reviews.
And the LMH stans made the TKEM comment section absolutely toxic with so much mudslinging. Imagine at one point 2,000 comments got deleted in the span of a few days due to people getting banned. That's how bad it got.
A poster has recently made me realize, is Start Up being rated too low? Now, people consider a rating of 1-6 as low, and there has been accusations of manipulation in the ratings. So I thought, wouldn't it be interesting to see what other shows are rated this "low" and how does Start Up compare to it?
In this list I am including all shows in 2020 from South Korea that are completed, have over 2,000 ratings, and collated all the 1-6/10 ratings. These are the stats, so use it how you will.
Disclaimer: of this list I've only seen Start Up and TKEM. If the people clamoring for higher ratings would be so oblige, tell me what ranking you think the show actually deserves, then I can post all the shows in that particular rating range, and you can them compare them. All the shows included here are rated between 7-8 stars.
Start Up - 4,946 users 1-6/10 - 14% of ratings
The King Eternal Monarch - 17,039 users 1-6/10 - 12% of ratings
Record of Youth - 6,556 users 1-6/10 - 16% of ratings
Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol - 3,788 users 1-6/10 - 13% of ratings
Oh My Baby - 2,438 users 1-6/10 - 9% of ratings
Dinner Mate - 3,465 users 1-6/10 - 8% of ratings
The Game: Towards Zero - 2,080 users 1-6/10 - 12% of ratings
Forest - 2,896 users 1-6/10 - 15% of ratings
Backstreet Rookie - 6,019 users 1-6/10 - 17% of ratings
School Nurse Files - 3,216 users 1-6/10 - 16% of ratings.
Meow, the Secret Boy - 5,075 users 1-6/10 - 17% of ratings.
Rugal - 2,659 users 1-6/10- 20% of ratings
Based on this list, Start Up is actually below average in term of "Hater" ratings.
If you believe this, then you haven't been reading the 23k worth of comments, analysis, and theories. Maybe don't…
So ratings based on logic based thoughts and analysis is too low. But ratings that are all 10's are accurate? Hmmmm...
So the current rating of the show is 7.9. Do you think this is too low?
FYI dododosol is rated 7.8, ROY is rated 7.6. and TKEM is rated 7.9.
To give you reference.
Let me place things in perspective for you. You say ratings of 1-6 is too low, and imply people are deliberately rating the show lower compared to other drama. Let us see if this is true and let's look at rating statistics. I will make a new comment to show a more comprehensive list.
do you mind me asking what were the lessons you learned from the show?
The things that were holding them back were exit strategies, plan B's, and conventional wisdom.
Things that you will want to consider when you pursue your future in business and investment.
What the show doesn't touch on is the reasons those things that "hold back" SST exist.
Pray first and make it happen, is great in romance, as romance is an intangible situation that cannot be measured. But when it comes to career, business, tangible dreams and etc... "Pray first, then make it happen" is a concerning lesson. IMO.
Ok guys, can you all stop rating this amazing drama low, because your ship has burned? I know everyone was rooting for Yong San and Saha, but the drama is over and it's done.
I think the writer was very aware of Yong San's rising popularity. In fact rumor was that ep. 16 was suppose to be Saha and Cheul San's wedding episode, but they nixed it and didn't even show them getting married in the last episodes. Out of respect for Yong Sans's character.
Just like everyone here, I felt the heat of the chemistry between Yong San and Saha when they were making those anagrams, so incredibly cute!
People keep watching, they hate it, but they keep giving the show chances hoping that each episode will get better. Next episode comes, it doesn't get better, but these audience keep giving the show multiple chances, hoping against hope the ending will somehow magically save all the mistakes.
