I'm watching and liking both dramas for different reasons, but imo Gu Qianfang isn't that more complex compared…
For me GQF is more complex than WXS and BCF who both have singular objectives (one is to always do the right thing, the other is to gain fame and power). GQF will not hesitate to kill even his best friend if the circumstance calls for it but will do the noble thing if the circumstance allows it. Also, I wouldn't say that he is whipped (YET š) - he is all about tough love but still giving his lady love room to make her own decisions. Overall though - you are right he is a typical ML, the cleaned up version of SMZ and DFJ who are grittier.

WSX is not silly but his passion and principles about doing the right thing make his character flatter than the other characters. Same thing with BCF with his ambition and narcissism. They are not one dimensional but just less interesting to me. Of course with the remaining episodes we will see WXS grow and BCF too although his path will take a different turn. For now I am unable to appreciate their youth when compared to the more experienced, more complex DFJ and SMZ. As for FYK, heās is in his own league š Even though like @awkward potato, I donāt condone his actions, I still am entertained by his character a lot!

Up to eps 20 - WXS is still this clueless boy who has no idea how skilled FYK is, and BCF is simply uber ambitious, open and unashamed to do anything to achieve dominance. I want more layers and complexity to my heroes! Like Gu Qian Fan in A Dream of Splendor š
