I'm in the same limbo. I was actually planning to watch The Princess Royal next, but the comments on the drama…
I also liked that novel for the leads, but I just could not forgive the author for trying to redeem Rui Wang. Although FL's half-sister was not a good person, she definitely did not deserve getting gang-raped repeatedly by Rui Wang's subordinates. And his poor wife, too. Despicable man doesn't deserve redemption. A very good novel was ruined for me just because of that.

Malicious Empress is in SM's pov, so most of it is female centric. Although XJX does not appear much in the first 90 chapters, he actually gets a lot done behind the scenes, which can be adapted on screen. His character won't lose out at all. They can definitely pick a star for this one.
Anyway, I am just hoping... I know chances are slim.

I actually translated 'The Times Spent in Pretense' by that author, lol.
Not a fan of TBAVW. I mean, I loved it until the author decided to write a redemption arc for Rui Wang. Simply hated that. My favorite from the author was Eight Treasures Trousseau, followed by Ascending, Do Not Disturb.
A quality author, and to adapt her novels, you need quality scriptwriters.

Thinking back on it, I think Xu Kai and Seven Tan would be perfect to play Xie Jing Xing and Shen Miao. Xu Kai also expressed his desire to collaborate again with Seven Tan as enemies. XKX and SM start out as being on opposite sides, for the first few chapters at least.

I read Rebirth of the Star General. It was very good, too. It actually is a bit similar in plot to The Double. I am yet to read the novel The Double is adapted from.
I actually started my Chinese novel journey with Malicious Empress. I had just finished watching The Legends, and I saw a comment on Twitter saying that Xu Kai would be perfect to play Xie Jing Xing from Malicious Empress. This was back in 2020. Anyway, that made me curious, and I checked it out. Now I'm here having read hundreds of Chinese novels. 😅
Gao Han's role isn't that prominent in ALP. I didn't even realise K from FIYS was in ALP even though I was watching both the dramas at same time (both were on air at the same time..)
He was a steward of some kind in FL's (Hou Chi, not Shang Gu) residence.

Have you read Malicious Empress novel? If not, start with it. If it is adapted correctly, The Double would not stand a chance. Both were written by the same author.
Lighter and princess- if you have not watched it yet
White Olive Tree novel was written by the same author who wrote As Beautiful As Beijing, which this drama is based on. I'm very excited for that drama.
Already got all episodes on my phone. And just an hour ago I copy pasted the episodes on to my laptop too to continue watching during the weekend.

I have read a few decent ones already. Rest all seem too polar.
Please watch WOL, it's soooooo good. A very satisfying ending, too.

I want to start a petition to have Gao Han star in all Xu Kai dramas 😂
