This is an out of the box thought, but midway through Ep 5, I had a brain spark. I'm wondering if she's K's grandmother I.e. her father's mother?!?
I've been questioning how K and her Aunt are clearly so wealthy (apartment, cars etc.) for no apparent reason. And based on K's parent's car in the US., also wealthy...putting 2 and 2 together and coming up with 100 😆 maybe it's all from Yong Sook (the old lady in question)

So many of my drama fav's discussed here...maybe I'm more interested in the many, varied, marriage tropes, than I'm willing to admit 🤔 Thanks for another great article to get us thinking!

I liked this even more on the 2nd viewing. Gently pointing out all of the issues in the idol industry but still full of compassion for ALL involved.

I agree "watch responsibly" - you can't righteously form an opinion if you haven't viewed it at all. I kind of assumed, Squid Game being a social satire, the misogyny depicted was one of the things the writer was identfying and depicting, to show how it's one of Korean Society's wrongs.
But as I said, too violent for me, so not watching for now.

I haven't watched Squid Game. Yet. Not much stomach for violence right now. Nor social satire. Give me fluff and romance for a bit longer. And if it's gender equality and acceptance of all, in that fluff and romance, I am there!

I wasn't disturbed by his actions either BUT. You've exactly described it yourself with "almost like a parent caring for their kid". You could definitely see his actions as infantilising her - treating her like a child, rather than a grown, independent, intelligent and successful woman. I also don't think that was his intention (or maybe I don't WANT to think that 🤔)
But it's so great to be aware enough to ask that question.

Just a little rant about how great an actor Kim Joon Han is...
The character he plays in Hospital Playlist, Ahn Chi-hong, is SUCH a contrast to One Spring Night. In Hospital Playlist, he's in love with Chae Song Hwa, and his respect for her is everything. He doesn't want to impose upon nor burden her, so he moves to a different hospital. So much grace in his choices - a great example of how to behave when your feelings are not reciprocated...
compared with the self-enitled misogyny of Kwon Gi-Seok, the character he plays in One Spring Night.

Love this Shiro! I was reading an article today in my region, about how Korean feminists are boycotting "Squid Game", because of its inherent misogyny. Not quite about consent, but in the same ball park.
I'm so excited when people question what they're viewing, rather than just switching on and switching off, and you make such a cogent analysis.

OMG agreed! What you see is what is normal. For so many people, it won't change until they csn 'SEE' it. Dramas seriously have so much potentisl to initiate change if they would just be courageous.

Am I the only one, really irked by the fact Yumi is crying over her crush being gay?!? He clearly trusts you enough to reveal this MASSIVE secret about himself but all you can do is cry and feel sorry for yourself?!

The rationalisations for starting a contract marriage are really getting more absurd - marrying someone to get revenge on their ex, because he spread a false rumour about you, which allowed him to swoop in and steal your scholarship. ..aside from that, this ain't bad.
