The puppets are carved leather, same with regular our world shadow puppets but bigger in size. That's why the "shavings" become the gnats - probably the leather was imbued with magic before carving. I think the puppets was purely magic and the puppets only behaved as they were instructed to do (no real intelligence).

But that one wasn't 100% clear in the drama especially after what happened with GS. Seems like what they did with Gao Shen was a new thing that Uncle Ao came up with than how it used to work.

When Long Zhi said her name is YLX, JZ thought it was a coincidence (because the real name of FL is Ye Qing Zhi, but she chose a new name Ye Liu Xi when they escaped the mines). So only JZ knew of Qing Zhi's chosen name and lo and behold he met someone whose name is the same as Qing Zhi's chosen name.

There's already a scene showing Long Zhi faking her name as Ye Liu Xi when JZ saved her. Fake YLX (Long Zhi) flirted with JZ who eventually had feelings for her. So in that sense, they became a couple. But later on, Long Zhi placed a "spell" on JZ where Long Zhi became Qing Zhi and YLX became a traitor. So in JZ's mind, YLX turned out to be a traitor after he fell for her and they became a couple.

This is spoiler-y. Some bits will be more clear later on.
JZ and YLX met as kids at Gold Mine Mountain, both as slaves. JZ taught YLX how to read while YLX taught JZ how to fight. JZ and YLX escaped the GMM together then founded the Scorpion Eye. JZ even as a child liked YLX, but she's not in the mood for love (she has a goal and drives towards it).
If you're wondering if JZ and YLX became a couple (because JZ said YLX used to be his), that will be explained more later on. If you want, I can spoil further.

Using sorcery, the human-sized shadow puppets are used to drive in and out of the pass to trade goods because they don't have blood, they are not affected by the "blood run dry" curse. That is until YLX was born, the Nandou stars appeared in the sky, and the magic that fuels the puppets stopped working.

For some reason, YLX and the shadow puppets cannot co-exist (maybe because both can cross the worlds without harm - a sort of balance needed to happen). So the shadow puppets magic stopped working when YLX was born. So according to the prophecy, the "Bones of Liuxi" needed to die in order for the shadow puppets magic to work again.

Long Zhi's main motivations weren't really clarified until the end. Little bits of information seems to point to the shadow puppets revival as what the sorcerers really wanted. YLX after all was not the type to be controlled unlike shadow puppets. Having control over the goods that come from outside the pass was of great importance to the Longs. BUT that felt a side note than a main thing.

Makes me want to read the novel to get a better idea of this part of the story, tbvh. I wouldn't be surprised if CN censors didn't like the idea of the bad guys wanting full control and authority and the good guys crushing the powerful families and their military.

In the end, her motivations weren't made clear. It would be too much if it was because of JZ. That she like JZ from when they were kids but QZ took him away. She was in need of a fresh corpse. I was surprised that was part of LZ's flashback when she learned for JZ's suicide.
