In post-production, even actor, actress had perfect voice , they rarely can make schedule to come for dubbing…
Actually, It can be applied to modern dramas. People with accent in modern days are natural. Because we cant always expect people around us are from the same area. We have people in travel, people who worked in another city, people who came from different area to live in bigger cities like Shanghai, Shenzhen, Beijing, Suzhou, Chongqing, etc.
But unfortunately, we cant expect the various chinese accent to be used in period costume dramas. In that time, there is no long distance transportation (train, car, plane, etc) except wood carriage, horse, and walking. So it would not make sense if we heard someone speaks in mandarin with sichuan or cantonese dialect and the other people said something in perfect beijing standard mandarin. Usually the period costume drama was set in the same area or city. The characters grew up together in capital (for example) and logically speaking, they will speak the same perfect standard mandarin.
Or you cant expect that immortals or gods goddesses in xianxia drama speak mandarin with Sichuan or cantonese dialect. It will bring people out of story. So standard mandarin accent is very important and it's the most fit one.
Native mandarin speakers are very sensitive to accents. It is so obvious that it can distracted people from story. The chinese govt also always encourage the mainland shows to always use the "perfect standard mandarin". So ppl in all china can understand the dialogues more clearly. Plus it will help China to distribute the standard mandarin speaking to both domestic and international regions. Sometimes, heavy accent also can affected the mandarin tones and different terms. So it will create a confusion and misunderstanding.
In fact, foreign people who dont speak mandarin could not tell the difference between dialects vs standard mandarin. But for native mandarin speakers, we can tell the difference right on the spot. We also can guess that people from which region based on how they speak the lines.
It is the biggest reason why actors with accent need to clean their accent and transform it into standard mandarin + improve how to read the right line deliveries. For example, Mark Chao is from Taiwan. He got southern dialect accent. But he improved himself for many years and now, he can speak the perfect mandarin without southern accent.
In post-production, even actor, actress had perfect voice , they rarely can make schedule to come for dubbing…
I still prefer to choose real voice than dubbing. Actually, I am happy, many productions (both modern n period costume) start to use the people real voice + on-set recording nowadays. Because voice is definitely one of the most important part of acting and performance from actors. It also will give the actors n actresses more experience and quality in their acting.
You can't expect actors and actresses to be muted for whole the time. Time to grow up. Time to improve. Practice makes perfect. The real acting is involving real voice.
Dubbing basically cant replace the emotions that naturally captured in the moment from actors voice in on-set recording.
That's why c-dramas need to enhancing their sound recording quality on-set. "New Life Begins" is the perfect example. They were shot in Hengdian but they still can control the noises. And the voices are much more natural and captured more emotions than voice dubbing after post production. You should check that drama so you will understand what I meant. For LLTG, some voices got captured perfectly, but some voices were still in humming. Yes they need to improve the sound quality but I already respected their hardwork n choices to keep all the real recording. It gives more texture to the dialogues.
Korean dramas also can do that. They used real on-set recording with very good quality of voices and sounds. So the chinese productions also actually can do the same.
In conclusion, everyone opinions are different. And I respect your choice of dubbing. Mine? I still prefer to choose real voice over dubbing. Because dubbing is a comfort zone for many actors with accent. And they need to improve more.
In post-production, even actor, actress had perfect voice , they rarely can make schedule to come for dubbing…
"But if the actor or actress love to do that job, then yeah, no one forbidden u, it's not like they didn't give a chance."
The producers are the one who did the decision making. So it's not about the willingness of the actresses or actors alone. The production teams would consider many factors besides cost, quality, and experience. The most important thing is the actors and actresses can speak perfect mandarin without accent + good line deliveries. People with accent will not be allowed to use their voice even if they want to do it.
Some ppl who dubbed themselves, Yang Zi and Deng Lun for Ashes of Love, Tang Wei for Ming Dynasty, Hu Ge and Wang Kai for Nirvana in Fire, Yang Mi for Pearl Eclipse, and many more. Zhao Lusi also often use her own voice. I still can say many other actors actresses who already used their own voice.
So the schedule obstacle is not the problem actually. They can spare the time if needed. As long as there is an agreement between them and production teams.
Ah, some c-dramas now already used on-set recording directly. For example Love Like The Galaxy, New Life Begins, The Longest Day in Chang An, Story of Minglan, Rise of The Phoniexes, etc. We can tell from the sounds + people voices are more natural.
So, if there is no problem with CYQ mandarin, she actually can use her own voice. But idk if the production team thought that her low pitch voice will not suit the character. It's already another issue.
Yes.. a low budget drama.. but the story plot is nice so far
Yup. S and S+ are totally a different realm already. For example Love Like The Galaxy, Who Rules The World, Pearl Eclipse, Snow Sword Stride, A Dream of Splendour, Ancient Love Poetry, Ashes of Love, LBFAD, You Are My Glory, She & Her Perfect Husband, Goodbye My Princess, The Longest Promise, and etc.
S class ~200 million RMB S+ class ~ 300-600 million RMB
A class ~ 100 million RMB (Female Student Who Arrived at Imperial College, Romance of Tiger and Rose, Unchained Love, etc)
B class ~ lower than 100 million RMB (many 24 eps idol dramas with new actors or unfamiliar faces)
C class ~ it got very limited budget, usually short length dramas.
I know Dylan Wang was dubbed because of his thick Sichuan accent.
But....
Anyone knows the reason why Chen Yuqi is always dubbed in her dramas? I watched her interview for UL and I was surprised that her voice is a very different type with the dubbing actress. She got low pitch female voice and it's very unique! It reminds me of Zhou Xun low unique voice and it becomes the uniqueness of Zhou Xun acting in her dramas. I love ZX voice especially in Ruyi Royal Love in the Palace. No one dare to dub her unique voice.
I am just wondering, what if she used her own voice? It would bring a new experience to her + she can improve her acting more. Why they didnt give her a chance to use her own voice?
Lol dont say "It was actually the consort's dream" lolEDIT : IN THE TOMB lmao
Yes. But it was REVIEWED after the success of LBFAD. I dont talk about the order of filming between LBFAD n UL.
After the success of LBFAD, they elevated the status of UL from A class tier to get the attention equal to S class project (with traffic stars). Just because Dylan is a traffic star now.
Yes I also dont like her wide blank stare. It put me out of the story sometimes. Her acting in Mirror A Tale of…
Sorry, I disagree. Wooden acting and cold acting are different. Dylan was also acted cold in LBFAD + Unchained Love but he is not as plain and blank as Chen Yuqi in MTC.
Chen Yuqi clearly did wooden acting there with her wide blank stare. People were also ranted about that a lot. So no need to save her face in that drama. The script was terrible, the acting for both main leads (CYQ n Li Yi Feng) were the nightmare, the chemistry was zonk.
And it really made me angry. It's a pity because basically MTC got the proper material (from the novel) to become a good angsty fantasy xuanhuan drama. But they wasted it in a hot mess production.
It was like a drama without souls. It felt empty and chaos. So, let's just respect our own opinions. She did better in Unchained Love but it didnt remove her past track records.
Lol dont say "It was actually the consort's dream" lolEDIT : IN THE TOMB lmao
Chinese government dont like crazy fans who over-idolize someone. They already knew how hardcore the chinese fans in internet. For example, just look at how crazy Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo fans after The Untamed.
Plus Dylan is a new rising star who can still atrract many people to like him.
This is a fact that i heard from some ppl. Unchained Love went from A-level project status (Middle budget project) to key project status (Usually High budget dramas with traffic celebrities inside) in censorhip list.
Why it happened? Because after LBFAD, Dylan was become the center of attention. Unchained Love was filmed before LBFAD. So it naturally alerts the censorship after that. They need to behave "more strict" to traffic stars dramas. It was the reason for the sudden status changing from low key project to key project. And yes. That's why Unchained Love trial got twists and turns from censorship + they have controversial/taboo theme because it's about the love story between eunuch (fake or not, his status is still a eunuch) and emperor's consort.
Yes.. a low budget drama.. but the story plot is nice so far
It's a pity. At least, they have two well known actors (no traffic status yet).
I noticed that besides You're My Destiny (middle budget), Xing Zhao Lin always play low budget dramas including 3 seasons of his hit dramas "Eternal Love". It was considerably low budget but successful.
Lol dont say "It was actually the consort's dream" lolEDIT : IN THE TOMB lmao
Chinese period costume is the best. No other east asian countries can beat that.
Japanese period costume dramas cant be counted anyway. They only focus on samurai. They cant bring the imperial kingdom life bcs japan is still under imperial ruler.
Once again, dont be overthinking. I believe period costume drama still can be aired safely. And many productions are still producing this genre. Both fantasy n historical.
I know it's hard for people with accent. But practice makes perfect. They are native mandarin speakers already.
I also hope more c-dramas use real on-set recording like New Life Begins and LLTG.

This is indeed a hot mess in the end. Poor Peng Xiao Ran. After Dong Gong, she has not gotten any right project yet.
P.S : No need for some particular fans to debate over this drama after my comment. Just accept its failure. And move on.
I noticed that besides You're My Destiny (middle budget), Xing Zhao Lin always play low budget dramas including 3 seasons of his hit dramas "Eternal Love". It was considerably low budget but successful.
C-dramas eps length is around 30-45 mins
So i still like SML more. Riley Wang 😍
I am wondering if this is low budget drama? With Xing Zhao Lin and Riley Wang inside? What year they produced this drama?
