I had to reread it coz it's been awhile.
He basically stayed with her corpse every day - pinned flowers in her hair, put on make-up and tell her stories about his childhood. After a while though, because he doesn't have enough weak water, her body starts to decompose. He stopped directly touching her because mortal Qi is turbid so he knows that she will decay faster if he does.
The part where he says "Time to make YXW happy" was before he went to YBC in jail. I think he meant to continue mentally torturing YBC while she is being tortured by and bitten by the snakes (YBC is afraid of them) to get the feeling of satisfaction from her suffering. Making her suffer is payback for what she did to YXW so TTJ thinks this will make YXW "happy". He is pretty crazy at this point.

It's a matter of flow I guess. For example, the first 8 eps were evenly paced then the next 2-3 eps leading to TTJ being king were sped up. Then the dream arc slowed down so much (this part was very short in the novel but I think production spent so much money on this arc so they decided to keep as much footage as they could) before they resumed the current mortal arc.
Production did the best they could considering the cutdown from 56 to 40 eps so I still appreciate it. These ever changing regulations suck though.

It was supposed to have 2 parts but production decided to compress it into 1 part with 40 episodes but longer running time (50~55 mins instead of 40mins/ep). This is because a new regulation was released that if a drama has 2 parts, there should be around 3-6mos break in between the parts. I guess production was afraid of losing momentum if they follow that rule.
Though i ve stopped at ep 18 so to wait for subbed episodes and binge, i read that many people are wondering about…
Actually, drama simplified some storylines and interconnected so many things that were not quite as linear in the novel. Novel is also quite sprawling with many side stories and had even more artifacts so I think drama did a good job in condensing it. I agree with Megumi-H. Just pay close attention and if you have any questions, feel free to ask here. 😊

There are several arcs too. We are in the mortal arc now. Not sure if the drama can do the rest of the story justice because of the constraints placed by govt.regulations. This is one drama that could benefit from 50+ episodes. Too bad we ain't getting it.

TMOPB was actually the 1st xianxia I saw. Mark Chao's portrayal was very good and steady. LYX is more bombastic, I say! 😂 I love them both!
