They are not in a relationship. No one is promoting a toxic relationship here. ML and FL are strangers. Had she not intervened he would have left her completely alone in the beginning. She is no weak damsel in distress. Also they are not tormentor and victim. She is more the victim of the SML who keeps throwing her in the middle hoping to catch the assassin without caring if she gets hurt.

The actress is amazing in this role! But it must also be tough to play the mother of an actor who is just 7 years younger.

It seems that Xu Zhengxi is bending his head in most scenes, no matter with which actor. Maybe this is how he or the director wanted to portray the character. It conveys the image that the character is pondering something, which he actually is all the time.

You could try The Blue Whisper - it has more kissing scenes and a HE, but it’s quite sad in many parts.
