After watching all 4 episodes, I like it. I think it has a good mix of everything- romance, martial arts, tragedy, politics, and humor- without taking itself too seriously or becoming muddled up. It’s a soap opera so I don’t expect Oscar level work.
I also think it’s really easy to see the differences in style between the directors. Once the story returns to the palace is probably one of the best scenes for this. It feels completely different in visuals and tone from the jianghu.
I like the whole cast so far. PXR and RJL play really well off each other as RJL has domineering energy while Xiao Ran has a defiant energy.

The book isn’t quite as coherent but I believe the ultimate plan is to rule through Cang Cang’s children since Xiao Huan isn’t expected to live that long.

That’s the point. They’re showing it really doesn’t work. Those who are criticising/hating on Cang Cang right now because she’s free spirited don’t know what is in store for her.
