Here's what's funny. A couple of years ago, I'd just started watching Chinese dramas and my source was Netflix. Lingjian was carried by that streamer so I decided to give it a watch. I loved it. By the way, it was my first exposure to Xu Kai. I thought he was funny, cute, touching, and capable in action scenes.
As I got in deeper into Chinese dramas, with access to Viki, iQiyi, etc., I was eventually able to watch all of Xu Kai's dramas and I was never disappointed by his performance. For whatever reason, despite having watched lots of dramas, I have never followed another actor as I have Xu Kai.
I may be a Xu Kai, but at least I'm not a hater ... like you.

It's established that Mei Zhuyu represents a side branch of the Mei family. The relatives aren't close apparently as Mei Si didn't know that Zhuyu was in Chang'an during the incident 18 years previously.
His mother's family did not approve of his father so they eloped.
Is it possible that his mother's side is Mei?
Side note: Anyone other than Mei Zhuyu would be resentful that he hadn't been taken in by Mei Si's family after his mother died. I guess when they cut someone out of the family they aren't kidding around.😐 Their loss.

I just reviewed it. At the very beginning, when they were descibing the actions their blades let them take, Bibi's read, “In this round, the Chief Steward may not place the main talisman.” Bibi said, "I am the Chief Steward and cannot place the main talisman.” So the game had her lie🤥
Since Xu Kai was given the information that Bibi and Peng were either the Deputy Steward or evil, by her saying she couldn't place the main talisman, it let Xu Kai know she's the deputy.
Watching it again, you can see Bibi and Kai conferring quietly in the background of some scenes.

Comparing actors isn't really productive. It appears that Xu Kai is no longer compelled to sh*t out three dramas a year. Not every actor has this luxury or has made the same choice.
