It seems in historical costume dramas, no matter how pretty the person is nobody ever thought it was a female. Some other characters' gender benders even wear lipstick, have breasts, and sound like female, but are still considered as a male just because they wear male clothes.

So it seems Yi Mei is an antagonist here. She's been scheming a plan for 500 years. She released Black Wind to wreak havoc in the town, to (further) test Hu Zi, since Hu Zi's winning at the arena is not by cultivation power but by his intelligence. When Yi Mei and Xiao Xuan's old master are looking at a painting, it shows a man and a woman standing with their faces looking the other way. Could they be Hu Zi's parents? Yi Mei has a love grudge that's why she's looking for their child to retaliate against them.
