Oh, my comment is not clear about the An Shi Rebellion. It's not what happened in this drama, it's just an example of the jiedushi system problem. This drama is set in the end of Tang Dynasty.

Jiedushi system was abolished in Yuan Dynasty, but the military powers were reduced by Zhao Kuang Yin (the founder of Song Dynasty)- who should be the reference of the new emperor Fan Xuan in this drama.

Ok Question from someone who doesn't know Chinese History.... All these provinces happen to be the same names…
Based on the novel's historical events, I think this novel borrows the history of the end of Tang Dynasty, skipped the gap of 'Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms', went directly to Song Dynasty.

In the end of Tang Dynasty, many province governors rebelled, they are called θŠ‚εΊ¦δ½Ώ (jie du shi), they have both political powers and military powers, so with large army to anti the imperial court. This system has large threats to centralization, thus abolished in Yuan Dynasty. wiki link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jiedushi

You know An Shi Rebellion in Tang Dynasty? which is a typical example of how the province governors/military leaders can overthrow the imperial court. It's also a similar event that happened in this drama.

Btw, in the novel, the province names are the same in history, the drama replaced them with same pronunciation words to pass the censorship. Coz if they used the real name, may cause misleading to watchers' understanding of history. (History is highly respected in China, so should be accurate).

I love this series so far. I DO hope the main couple gets a HEA together. And I'm rooting for Ye Yun as well!…
Heng Dian. Most costume dramas are filmed there.

He was great in Ancient Love Poetry too
Dear, you should blame the screenwriter πŸ˜‚ coz most plots of Ep 1 - 12 are added by the screenwriter, not the author. Ep13 -16 are the flashbacks in the novel, then ep 17 is the novel's beginning. That's why you can't get into it, the FL is too childish. But she's mature in novel, you 'll see from ep17, Hou Chi's Arc. You can try from ep 13 .πŸ˜‹

I have a guess based on the novel...πŸ˜‚
There's a worker in Yuru's shop betrayed her and told the army's number to the enemy, which happend before the city defend of Youzhou. So the screenwriter probably put this setting on the step-mum. No waste on cast .πŸ˜… But Youzhou won!

Gu Nanyi was the best. He won everyone's heart even though he had so few lines outside of his repeated pledge…
Yeah, he's so loyal to Feng Zhiwei, not many lines, but Bai Jingting did a good job!

i still see novel fans on Weibo being angry and cursing the scriptwriter for the changeswe that didn't read it…
The haters are mostly from fans of the artists' rivals, yeah, other artists. The fightings on the net was not such fierce before, just becoming worse in recent years. You know Story of Kunning Palace? That drama was postponed coz many haters reported it to the government with all kinds of so-called 'reasons'. It had to undergo the third censorship again. Of course, hot dramas will face more attacks.
