In many countries and cultures, a dowry is a show of respect for the bride. It shows financial stability and am pretty sure that it's usually given to the bride herself or sometimes to both as a couple after they get married. In some countries, that bit of financial independence and security can save some women. In this century, a show of financial stability and that both set of parents approve of the marriage is pretty good, no?
