I wondered why the rating went down a week ago for the 3rd and 4th episode and, then it hit me, that was when Korea was going through it's President declaring marshal law turmoil. Lot's of kdrama's were canceled because of this during the crisis. However, the ratings have now started to recover -- 5.5 nationwide and 8 in Seoul. Onward and upward.
Glad the lilacs finally bloomed. We got the foretaste of that in episode 5. I am astounded by the misunderstanding of what is going on in this drama!
1. This ugliness towards the FL is stupid. Come on, she lost her parents, her job, and her first love. And then she discovered that her Father was cheating her Grandfather. Life in just a short time turned from sweet to bitter. And now 18 years later when she is finally able to move ahead and put her past behind her and confess to the nice guy nurse, she is rejected and her first love, WHO SHE HAS NEVER GOTTEN OVER SHOWS UP. And you anti this drama posters below expect her to be like a normal person? She is filled with bitterness -- with her life, and towards him. And she is angry at herself for discovering that she still has feelings towards him. Come on people, she is a victim of a person who is supposed to be her friend, but is instead a selfish, jealous bully who has been feeding her nothing but poison year after year.
2. Our ML has his own level of bitterness mixed with a large dose of pride. In this episode he had the opportunity to have an honest talk with her. And by the way that is what the FL wants as she asks over and over again, "Why did you come back? What is with this stupid bet about a flower? Why? Why? Why? Heartbreakingly he refuses to answer her honestly as his anger at the past takes over: "I want to dump you!" After that, I would want to curl my lip at him to.
3. Our 2FL is doing a great job. We viewers are supposed to hate her. We want her revealed ASAP and when she isn't (because she is cunning) we cry out in anger. The Director is doing that on purpose. Why? Because this is a Romcom.
4. In most kdrama's about midway through we have a breakthrough. The 2FL made a mistake with the phone. The lilac is miraculously blooming. Believe me, in the next two episodes stuff is going to happen big time. Be patient. Because you know what? If I know anything about romcoms the last thing this couple is going to have to deal with is the parents and grandfather! That will take at two episodes.
I have already posted this but this as well as Lovely Runner is the best romcoms of the year. One more thing, this drama will become noted as the breakthroughs for Hong Min Ki and Oh Yeju. After seeing them, how could it not be?
The adult versions are insufferable, the younger versions had more maturity.
Sorry to disagree. Here is the key to the adults and to why this is really good romcom stuff. The ML is supposed to be this rich, arrogant, super competent guy but he never hesitates to act like petty idiot in when he is with Ji Won. Everything about her drives him into love induced madness.
I think that both the adults and the teens are doing great in this. If we didn't know much about their youth then I would agree with all the posters trying to dish out grief to the adult version of the main couple. The truth is that together the teens and the adults form a whole which makes this drama deeper and better than your average romcom. And by the way, cut Ji Won some slack. In a short space in time she lost her parents, her job, her first love, and found out her Dad was a crook. It would be weird if she wasn't a little depressed and feeling low.
On another note, I just rewatched the end of episode 5 and I just have to say this -- Oh Yeju is crushingly beautiful. No wonder the lilacs bloom when she walks by. For me, she is right up there with the "Original Visual" herself -- Irene of Red Velvet -- when she was in her early twenties. Both of the teens deserve, no they need, to be cast in leads ASAP.
I have to say that the last 20 minutes of episode 5 is about as chemistry filled and romantic as it gets -- for both couples. In his dream Ji Won comes to him with all her young beauty, innocence -- a vision of loveliness. The same vision he has in episode 1 in the nurses office. And then after hours of her nursing him he wakes up and says -- Are you really Ji Won and despite the all that she has been through, he sees that she is, she is that same vision of loveliness. Then he looks at her with the same passion as he showed in the nurses office and he kisses her. And she kisses him back. All this happens with the wonderful back drop of "Day After Day" which is the best song in a romcom I have heard this year.
Folks, this drama has it all, good story, comedy, and intense romance. The people who try to bad mouth this drama simply don't know what a good romcom is! Sorry just my opinion.
I love both the teen and the mature version of this drama. Of course that was expected Ju Ji Hoon and Jung Yu Mi. They are well known, talented, and so people looked forward to their return to romcom. And they have not disappointed. Some people have complained that they are being petty. I guess the only response I have is that their is no age limit for being petty -- especially with their back story. But, more importantly, they are excellent at being petty in their roles.
The real surprise in this drama are teens. No one expected the chemistry that they ignite when they are together! No expected their excellence in acting. And their visuals! I don't know about Hong Min Ki, but Oh Yeju has added 20000 followers in her Instagram site just in the past week. Their scenes together are all over X and Tic Tok. TVN is now starting to market them. Let's remember that when this drama began they were listed as just making guest appearances on MDL, On Vicki their pictures still are not up as part of the cast. They were no where to be found at the main opening interview of the cast. I wonder why?
However, I think that Park Joon Hwa soon realized what he had with these two young actors. I mean the person who directed Alchemy of Souls, What's Wrong With Secretary Kim, and Because This is My First Life, should know when he is directing romance that is combustible. Here is a bit of trivia, when Oh Yeju was cast as one of the leads in this year's KBS drama specials, PJH sent a coffee truck to promote and honor her when they began shooting, That drama entitled, To My Lonely Sister will be on Vicki before the end of month.
Oh Yeju made a splash in Korea and elsewhere when she unexpectedly appeared in the top 10 for the most buzzworthy actors/actresses list in her supporting role as the Crown Princess in Under The Queen's Umbrella. I think that may happen again here. Her Instagram account is going up by the thousands, she is all over X, tic toc is ablaze. The same, I am sure, is happening with Hong Ming Ki.
Now please understand, I really like the Main Leads, but the truth is that these two young people, with their visuals, chemistry, and acting talent have been the driving force for the buzz with this drama so far. In large part, I think, they are reason that the viewership almost doubled from episode to episode. I say this, because for whatever reason, most of the forums and press outlets were like MDL at first, they were only considered as people making a cameo or guest appearance. As time goes on with this drama, I hope they get the credit they deserve!
bro this is kdrama not movies, nobody give a f about kdrama ratings on imdb
Every Kdrama has a rating on IMDB. Here is how Wikipedia describes it: "IDMB is an online database of information related to films, television series, podcasts, home videos, video games, and streaming content online – including cast, production crew and personal biographies, plot summaries, trivia, ratings, and fan and critical reviews." Glad to educate you about the IMDB platform.
Guys is the Highschool arc gonna end after ep 4? Bcs they gonna date in ep 3 and they’re probably breaking up…
Who knows? The director said that the drama has numerous youth scene's. Perhaps we will see their angst from both missing and hating each other in College. But if I had to guess in episode 3 we will have the build up to romance -- because I don't think she is going to say yes right away, and at some point we will begin the sweetness. After that they need to be discovered by the parents and that should be quite a blow-up! After that, at some point we will find out about the break-up and more importantly why they had such anger towards each other after it happened. Now this all can either be a fast or slow process.
If it is a fast and all said and done in a couple of episodes, I wager the director will regret that. Because is, as good as ML's are, it is their teen counter parts that are driving the buzz with Love Your Enemy.
Over time I have learned to take MDL ratings with a heavy dose of skepticism. However the naysayers on this post seem to mainly complain about the fl clothes. I guess as a PE teacher she should wear a lovely, sexy, dress or classy pants suit. Give me a break! Other folks come out with the generic -- "I think this boring." Well if you think it is boring then you simply don't like romance, or high school first love or comedy. If so, I have great drama for you to watch and I am being honest here, it was a great drama -- The Glory.
By the way, right now When the Phone Rings is getting a 8.7 on MDL compared to the 7.9 for Love Your Enemy. Now, please understand, I have not watched When the Phone Rings. For all I know it could be a great drama. But the truth is over it's first two episodes it went down from ep 1 to ep 2, while Love Your Enemy doubled it's ratings. I don't write this to cut down WTPR at all, my purpose is to say that there is something going on with the MDL ratings of LYE. At Viki it held it's 9.8 rating over the first two episodes. At IMDB it is now at 9.5. Yes, I know, that there is not a lot of votes yet. But IMDB is a weighted average and not just a raw data average which makes it more accurate. Any drama over 8 on IMDB is considered outstanding and excellent.
Sorry, for this long post to make only one point -- ignore this MDL rating.
More news from the ratings and review world. On IDMB, Love Your Enemy has a 9.4 rating. That is huge. On that largest of worldwide platforms, a movie or drama over 7 is considered good and over 8 it is considered excellent.
This drama is rocking!! The viewership with Nielson Korea rose from 3.48 to 6.44. In Seoul it rose from 4.006 to 7.117. Almost doubled in viewership. On Viki it is still holding on to a 9.8 rating. So for you posters who trying to diss this drama -- it isn't working!!!
Glad to see that MDL has moved our teen version of the MC up from guest/cameo appearance to supporting cast. However, they still put them at the very bottom of the cast list? Wikipedia has it right. There they are listed in the main lead category each under their senior version.
The actress looks promising yes. she acts better in this that the FL (older character version)
I am a ardent, unabashed fan of Oh Yeju ever since she was the Crown Princess in Under the Queens Umbrella so I certainly agree with praise she is getting here. Yet I would like to say a word in favor of the FL. In episode 2 when she actually dresses up a little she indeed looks like the 30 something version of her teen counterpart and, in this episode she displays fiery temper that her younger version displayed. Both the leads were able to convince me that they were indeed the same people who were in high school together. Now to do that takes some skill as an actor.
It could be that Oh Yeju lights up the screen so much that she is a tough act to follow. The same goes with Hong Ming Ki. This has to be break through roles for both of them. They are going to be force to be reckoned with both the visuals and their acting in the future. It is a no brainer for me. Put them as a lead in any drama and it will be a success and make lots of money!
I don't know what is up with this rating on MDL, but right now on Viki it is at 9.8 which is about as high as a drama gets on that platform. Of course, it may drop some over the next couple of weeks, but I bet it will settle into the 9.4 to 9.6 range.
Frankly, I think it is unfair to say that Hong Min Ki and Oh Yeju are only making guest appearances in this drama. Isn't a guest appearances only limited to one or two scenes? Perhaps a total of about 5 to 15 minutes. Moon Sangmin made a guest appearance. Even the Director of this fine drama said that there were lots of teen scenes. Heck, their story is vital to understanding what is going on with the adults. If this is MDL, they should fix this! At least they should be listed as supporting cast members.
For the past week I have been watching Gangnam B Side where Oh Yeju plays the daughter of a cop. There she is mentally ill, depressed to the point of being suicidal, and perhaps addicted to drugs. And here we see the top student who downright ethereal in terms of beauty! That is a lot to wrap your head around.
