Xiao Yanyan's life story would have been interesting enough without a made-up lovestory. When did the Chinese…
Reading about the actual woman, her story would've made for a very good drama but it unfortunately wasn't to be with the way Mainland China produce dramas. Reminds me of Weiyoung the book vs the C-drama - night and day differences!
Wonder if another East Asian country could tell her story without shoehorning an invented romance in there? There's almost always got to be a love triangle or even reverse harem in these dramas ...

Title Marry Me
They have ruined the uniqueness of this Webnovel. I do not like how they portray Long Yue in this drama. I can’t…
Is the novel that much better? Not the first time I've read that, btw.

Title Oh! My Sweet Liar! Spoiler
Ep 9 unfortunately had the ML blackmailing the FL with imprisonment and death of her entire clan if she didn't marry him. She couldn't even bid her family goodbye.
Turned me right off him!

In all honesty, this drama is one big mess when it comes to moral or ethical aspects that in recent years has…
Nice to see someone comment with a strong moral compass!

Title The Heiress
The male lead is so bland which is disappointing because the female lead is great.
He's like the one in Dr Cutie: wooden!
I click back on The Sleepless Princess to see a tsundere character played by an actor that can actually act.

I think I'm experiencing burnout on c-dramas. Besides the fact that the premise requires a lot of suspension of…
Haven't seen this (I'd prefer DID to be treated more seriously, tbh) but your grievances sounds like my issues with a lot of C-dramas: they can outstay their welcome and consequently, drag.
And you're not alone with what some call: 'a strong air of the ridiculousness' with so many of their outlandish plots and scenarios. I've read fanfic that's better written, even with silly conceits but with more internal logic, so it can be done.

The female lead is so childish.
The whole thing is, unfortunately both in her voice dubbing and writing.
I'm still yet to see a good Republican Era set drama ...

Title Su Yu Spoiler
I agree! I've seen two already that are historical rom-coms and they were VERY disappointing (The Sweet Girl and…
I can deal with changes if it doesn't work on screen but the tone can be completely off e.g. the turning of a funeral in Dr Cutie into a comedic scene and in very poor taste, whereas the book, she's utterly heartbroken and its obviously more solemn.
Haven't yet finished the book, but yes, book Weiyoung is very different indeed! Without giving too much away, imagine a deadly serious Kill Bill, historical C-drama style and that's pretty much what it is, thus far. The drama watered it down her motivation, if not forgot her revenge entirely, replaced it with a Gary Stu love interest and became repetitious with her being set-up by the stock villains.
I'm actually watching Song of Glory and it similar! I agree that the FL is that is focused, but I'm only at ep 11, they might deviate soon.

I don't watch anime as much as I did in the past, but I am watching Scum's Wish at the moment.
Not a fantasy fan, unfortunately and I tend to really enjoy well done slice-of-life, thrillers, sci-fi etc.
Agreed! Rom-coms have been done to death and unless the writer is witty and inspired, I get bored. Like a insubstantial snack instead of a meal.
Ever come across the C-novels some of these dramas are based on? Seems the producers mangle a lot of them badly, like The Princess Weiyoung, which is supposed to be a stone cold revenge tale.

I love, love to read and have found that very few dramas/movies can truly bring a book to life. I have a simple…
So very true!
If the novel's available to read in translated form, I've often found to my horror a complete contortion of the tone to the extent that the drama 'adaptation' is merely a nominal one. No wonder some book fans are so apprehensive of adaptations.
I don't ever expect a replica of book on screen, but to lengths the screenwriters go to turn it into something much lamer than what was written or worse, down right mocking of what was done on the page? That's a sort of contempt I can't support and the female characters are often the ones who are deleted or diluted into lesser versions of themselves. What a shame when this is what occurs.
At least it might reawaken my need to read more, I suppose.
