As a novel reader, he has a pretty big role in the upcoming episodes. In the novel he doesn't even enter the story until much later. They probably introduced him early in the series so people have context when he comes in later.

THIS is slow burn done right. Not too fast, enough time spent on them understanding each other, but not agonizingly snail-paced with no development in their relationship.

I will say though, the scenes with JimmySea alone are the best. It gets kinda diluted when others come in. That's why I'm a bit nervous for upcoming episodes.
