"its not that i like guys, i just like him"there it is, the horrific cliche we all knew this show was gonna follow
Happens every day in real life. Coming out of the closet isn't easy. Never thought I'd defend this particular BL trope, but it's well-anchored in reality.
Ugh. I'm taking a break halfway through. This has taken a horrible turn toward the conventional and I'm trying…
People say "I'm not gay, I only like you" all the time in real life. It''s almost a required step in the process of coming out of the closet. If you got to skip it, then that's great, but it IS realistic and it IS a BL cliche. It's how things turn out that matters to me. Will they both maintain that position thru the end of the series? I don't know, we'll see. Or maybe I'll see, and you'll stop watching which would be a good choice as much as you seem to loathe the show at this point. The annoying commenters are the ones who claim to hate a show but keep watching anyway.
That was the worst episode so far, and was bad by general BL standards. Li Cheng veered from very creepy to wise…
Wow. My impression of this episode was pretty much 180 degrees from yours. I loved this episode despite its flaws.
In general, since you mentioned several of them, I do agree there are BL cliches being employed here that were not necessary. I hate unoriginality in all forms and these fall-back cliches are just lazy. You can get to the same point by new, creative means.
The "I'm not gay, I just love YOU despite your penis" is a tired plot device BUT it is also something that real, actual, human men often say when they are first beginning to come out of the closet. It's where we go from that statement that matters and the show is far from over. During my first and second gay relationships while I was still closeted, my BFs and I agreed we'd never been attracted to men before. We were both lying. People do a lot of that, to themselves and to others.
Real, actual, gay men who are struggling to come out ALSO turn to women who already like them as a convenient cover, or "beard." My god, that is as flawed and human a choice as there is; I was still doing it in my early 30s and so were/are many other men. Many millions of men stay in fake marriages their entire lives, never facing their sexuality and getting honest.
I LOVED the "lick scene." HOT HOT HOT. If LC licked my lips slowly and tenderly like that I would have had both our robes off in a split second, I guess because I am a whore. :D Seriously, you have never licked or been licked my a sexual partner in your life? Man, you are missing some amazingly great sex. A gentle, barely-touching lick of the lips like LC gave MR left me gaping at the computer screen with a mix of lust and romance, which is exactly what they were going for there.
Why is it necessary to announce that their is ONE certain way EVERYONE ALWAYS reacts to something like that, implying that anything different is perverted? Everyone reacts differently to everything all the time. We are individuals, not automatons.
LC did NOT, this week or last, say watching MR masturbate is WHY or HOW he developed feelings for him, he expressed how hot it was too watch and how difficult to not take advantage of the situation. He did NOT take advantage of the situation, but admitting that he wanted to, which again is a very human response to something like that, is brave and admirable in my estimation.
What can I say? I think for the most part the actors and show-makers are doing a great job of blending cartoonish and dramatic elements into an overall style of story-telling. I don't find the changes in tone jarring at all.
OK, that's it. I'm going to go lick someone who appreciates it.
Why people so surprised and dissapointed from the plot?! it's so predictable from the start, did they thought…
Parts of this show are extremely artistic and carefully thought out in imagery and dialogue. The elevator doors slowly closing on MR as LC looked on, seemingly separating them emotionally for good, was a gorgeous moment among many. Yes, it's a BL and I wish they'd made some more original choices in story-telling but to say there is NO artistic merit here is BS. I'll ask a question I ask a lot: If you think so little of this show, why do you watch it?
Before wading into comments and probably getting pissed off (lol), I wanted to say that this series has morphed into one of my top ten BL series. In the beginning it was so slap-stick, camera-tricky and comical, then I got bored in ep 2, then the story started to grab me and now I love the whole damn thing, warts and all. My heart aches for all four of the leads and I feel like I get where all four are coming from even though their perspectives on what is happening between them and among them are so very different.
Beautiful, tender moments that rival any BL romance ever: LC's confession to MR was heart-felt and sincere...as was MR's reaction to it. The dramatic and comedic acting both are top-notch, second to none.
Misstep: I don't buy that even as much of a head case as YJ is, he would actually show his parents a video of him seducing XS, especially anything physical. Nor do I think it was in character for him to spew out all the info about them sleeping together. YJ is an odd-ball, but he has been methodical and patient in his pursuit of XS. I'm sure others will disagree, but I don't believe he'd spill all that when it really wasn't necessary. He knew his dad would freak out and, of course, have a stroke or something. I guess they did break with BL tradition here and have the father instead of the mother, collapse in a melodramatic heap at the news that their offspring are gay.
Kudos: To MR for confessing to Gill so quickly that he was pursuing her as a panicked reaction to LC's confession to him and his own reciprocated feelings. He was using her and he admitted it and apologized. The "gay panic" reaction of a guy in sexual crisis turning to a girl who already likes him as a means of reassuring himself he is straight is a very real thing. I know. I did it myself.
I think the director was like 'Let's shot a bunch of random scenes and put them together with a crazy xxxx scene.…
It's highly rated because the chemistry between the leads is powerful and real, they are touching and hysterically funny and sexy all at the same time. With that sort of energy at the center of a film you can get away with a lot of other shortcomings.
Honestly bad acting or annoying characters, random scenes and plot that just suddenly turned to porn with really…
omg...there was nothing the slightest bit "rapey" about that scene. That's how real people having real sex look when they're doing it. I love how the sexual attraction between these two anchors their love right along with the emotional aspect.
The acting is a pure 10, especially by BL standards.
Favorite BL of all time. MC's relationship is funny and adorable and not the least bit cloying.
Absolutely unique, with tenderness and chemistry off the charts to go along with the film's hilarious sense of humor. I've seen it three times now. Looking forward to watching the second film later this week, which is at least as good as the first.
Sex scenes in the link I included just below this comment are hot and a little off-beat for the rest of the film, but do a lot to anchor the rock-solid love at the center of this film as being intensely physical as well as emotional.
Here's a link to a pretty clear video of the film, completely UNCUT, in five segments. The segments are mislabeled so just watch them in order going from top to bottom down the page. There's a second sex scene that I don't remember seeing the first two times around.
Third time watching this and it remains the first half of my favorite BL of all time. I love that DingDing is goofy and nerdy and not all that good-looking but has a beautiful, loving, funny soul and I adore him. I love that Za Ying is aloof, arrogant, confident and rich, overlaying a heart of pure gold. The chemistry between these two is utterly off the charts. The tenderness beneath their endless insulting/teasing banter is so sweet and palpable that several times I teared up just looking at the two of them together.
DingDing is the heart of this movie; none of it would work without him and the actor's unique way with facial expressions, physical tics, body language and all the rest. Za Ying is played near-perfectly as well, but his role is more subdued. He's the unmovable anchor around which everything else moves.
One reservation: That sadistic, mean-spirited "April Fool's Joke" that Za Ying plays is beyond cruel. I didn't believe for a second that ZY would be that vicious to anyone, let alone his DingDing.
Love the hot, near soft-core porn sex scenes too. They felt kind of strange, especially the first one, as compared to the mood of the rest of the film, but I liked that that physical passion was made clear as another layer that anchored their very unconventional love.
I know it's comedy and that's ok, but using braces doesn't make a person look ugly.
Yeah, and you don't generally take them off on a whim before it's time to do so. I'm sure Pi's mom would be pissed to know , after all the money spent on his mouth, that Pi just had the braces removed because some teenage idiots said to do so.
Generally speaking, there are way too many gimmicks of all kinds in this show. It doesn't trust the story to keep us interested, so there are a thousand camera, special-effects, physical comedy, narration, time jumps back and forth, sight gags, etc., etc. going on as a means of keeping our attention, I guess. It's not working on me though. I figure one more episode and if it doesn't grab me I'm out.
It was Duean who made the yogurt spoon for Mean, not Pi? They are the other couple. We only really see Pi interact…
Thanks for clearing the yogurt spoon scene up for me. Good casting...I often confuse the two brothers with each other. :D
In what way is Mork tricking Pi and being mean to him? All I ever see is Mork buying him coffee and tending to him during heatstrokes and asking him to be his friend, that type of thing. These are not mean, tricky actions.
I don't feel the comedy is over the top. I just find most of it boring. The entire dental office scene was way too long and extremely boring and added nothing to the story.
As for why Mork likes Pi so much, you'd think we'd see some hint of that by the end of two episodes, since Mork is always fawning over Pi. I can't imagine what the big reveal of some super-awesome reason Mork likes Pi would be, but if that happens...I just hope I'm still watching by then. This episode I stuck it out, but it was such a let-down from the first episode. I saw the director and writers trying to show how clever and inventive and zany they could be with comedic tricks. Meanwhile, the story, such as it is, went to the back burner.
