I think you are right that HN figured out why JW rejected him, but further, I think JW should have told him about the Chairman's threat. I understand she had her reason not to. Knowledge is power, and he needs to know that the Chairman sees him as expendable. Not telling him is not protecting him. The Chairman could go after him for something that his mother does not just because of JW. He needs to know that so he can watch his own back.
