I'm wary of the episode count since this is only the prequel part? The past versions I've seen combine this part and the Snowy Mountain into 1 and even then I thought it was draggy. I hope the fight scenes are good but don't have high expectations.
This is the last time I trust a Cdrama trailer. The trailer for this and Murder in Kairoutei looked pretty impressive and interesting and the real product turned out so blah. It's like expecting a filet mignon only to take a bite and realizing it's a Slim Jim from a gas station. The actors are pretty good, it's everything else that is a hot mess.
I'm not much of a xianxia fan but have to say the trailer looks impressive. Not having read the book, I'm hoping there's actual plot, character and world building, and more substance than just being all about a melodrama angst-filled romance.
That was a satisfying ending episode, which is rare to me, and even rarer still for something that is supposed to be multiple seasons. Other shows who plan (or planned) on "S2+" but not sure if it will happen or not take note! I love the family relationships the most, XFN with his dad and 2nd sister are definitely the highlights and I wished we got more of them.
That said as a wuxia enthusiast, I was left wanting more and disappointed and I blame that solely on the marketing missteps which set up false expectations. Had this not been touted as such, and as people have pointed out, the source isn't one anyway, I think it would've been judged less harshly. I live for the big group "epic" fight scenes like in the finale. Not the fight choreography itself which sucked but just the event as a plot, character, relationship device. Like in Jin Yong stories, he was a master at sprinkling these group fight scenes throughout his stories.
The drama is not without its fault but I like the story, most of the cast, and it looks good. That's about all you can ask for nowadays. And ZRY is so darn charismatic. I will say the drama comes off like a try-hard and that bugs but so far the good far outweighs the bad.
Randomly picked this up and glad I did. It's one of the better crime dramas out there with well-rounded characters, great supporting characters, plot, and not a lot of nonsense. The draw of the show is surely the 2 leads and their relationship. You can't help but root for them despite knowing there's no way it will end well right from the start. The actors are great in their roles. Never seen XHW in anything and QJJ only in Snow Tower but man they knocked it out of the park. XHW's Gu Tao is electric whenever he's onscreen and QJJ's turmoil as an undercover cop is powerful.
I haven't liked a true wuxia in a long time and if it keeps up the momentum from these beginning episodes, has a lot of potential. Enjoying the "physical bickering" they do with breaking out in mini duels and fights. The fights are well choreographed both visually and for the flirty intent behind it. Haven't read the book so looking forward to watching the plot unfold too.
The romance in here is pretty minimal so shouldn't be too hard to adapt on that front. I think the bigger challenge…
But I'm also guessing that they'll remove some of Fei Du's darker characteristics/tendecies with the censoring which is a shame cause it makes him interesting and gives him some dimension
The romance in here is pretty minimal so shouldn't be too hard to adapt on that front. I think the bigger challenge with censorship in this book are the cases. Most of the topics the cases touch upon are taboo subjects? I guess you could argue what's a crime substituted for another crime but we'll see.
I think Steven will kill it acting wise as Fei Du so hoping this casting is true.
I'm surprised to see that Song Jiyang left so much of an impression on so many people from Untamed to want him for Xie Lian. He had what 1 hr or less total of screen time? Thinking about it, yeah visually his XXC is a pretty good match for XL. The characters share a lot of characteristics too. I can buy it I guess. As for the romance turned bromance part of the script, I'm assuming they'll play it off like in Guardian where thousands of years of pining was just bromance. Also agree with comments on budget and CG. TGCF is a more expansive and fantastical world imo, gonna be hard.
The best thing so far (apart from the eye candy that is ZLH) is the 5 musketeers. Love the friendships between them. And I love that each character brings their own strength to the table and all contribute to solving the cases.
It's so refreshing to see a cool, calm, and collected FL instead of the usual innocent cutesy types. I just started this and the pace is good so far, hope it won't drag in the middle . This is the first time I've seen ZLH and he's attractive and quite a natural.
I feel like 75% of C-dramas have this problem, where the first half is good and then you start side eyeing the plots a little bit. Then it drags and bam it ends abruptly with a middle finger to the audience like haha suckers. Especially the ones in this genre. I haven't seen one in 2020 where I thought it was good from beginning to end yet.
The angst is a bit much. Does it ever let up considering the number of episodes? I don't mean for a few scenes but a good long stretch of fluffy episodes is needed. But Cheng Yi is doing a great job. I haven't seen him in anything besides this and he's nailing the role. Also the physical abuse between WT and LL is hard to watch. I wasn't expecting that. Thought it was headed to the typical villain in obsessed mode trope.
The academy plot surprised me cause it feels like the characters are way past the stage of usual "academy/schools" plot lines. Now it reminds me of Dance of the Sky Empire. Seems a little weird coming in the middle of the story. I'm just waiting for the truth to come out about ZQL so FL can go kick some booty. Did the original Feng Wu die? I kinda feel bad for her if she isn't. For the 2 mins. we saw her, she didn't seem annoying or weak like the original soul in Eternal Love so that you wanted the new soul to take over for real.
He keeps sending her away *lol* That's typical cold man pattern. They always get super soft underneath their shell…
In this drama? Or talking about TMOPB? Yes in TMOPB but not here cause this is following the novel and the novel isn't like that. He's not cold but oblivious like pinksprings said. As soon as he knows what's up it's the opposite, he keeps chasing after the woman. And in the novel, he never sends her away, he just never knew she existed until they officially met. Once that happens, he's the one that keeps trying to engage her, while she's trying to avoid him.
Because Donghua Dijun in the original novel is more lively. Im glad he really feels like the real Donghua Dijun…
Yeah it'll be interesting to see how TMOPB viewers but non-book readers will respond to this because of expectations. They should've kept it Pillow Book and not try so hard to tie it to the Eternal Love thing considering it's so different. Anyhow novel Dong Hua is way more attractive character for me. Mischievous, shameless, does want he wants without regards to rules, and will fight to get what he wants. TMOPB made Dong Hua way too passive and cold.
Like other C-dramas, I think this would've been better with less episodes. Especially with rom-coms, there's no reason to drag out stuff when the plot is so simple. The first half or so is pretty cute and cheesy and then it starts getting draggy.
You know the meme Chanel vs Walmart? This is what this feels like. I can't take the female lead anymore. It feels like she's trying way too hard to imitate JJH and failing at it miserably. And she has zero charm. The male lead is ok but he doesn't have the screen presence KSH had. And between the 2 of them is negative chemistry. The rest of the cast doesn't have that much charisma either. I'm just gonna go rewatch the original.
I haven't read the novels but I've watched episodes 25/26 and I think wuxian's actions have been quite reasonable.…
Well like they say the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Because in his quest to protect innocent people he ends up...hurting innocent people. Don't get me wrong, WWX is my favorite character because he's got the most personality but he messes up in an epic way. A lot of what happens is his own fault. He's got his reasons for his actions but so does everyone else, which I think is the main point.
