Yes i agree the cut seems bizzarre seeing how she fought with Li Ni before she fainted and then Li Ni suddenly waited for her at the gate. They put the explanation regarding why Li Ni make peace with her in scene where she and Li Ni sit on the roof top sharing their stories (In the book, Li Ni found the shallow grave and realized that Cui Lin trying to make amends for her mistake)

It's not that Li Ni too oblivious to ignore Ms Gu's intention in pursuing him, more like he already clear where his heart lies. Ms Gu didn't do any bad things yet, there's no reason for Li Ni to mistreat/ignore her. But Ms Gu is clever as well, she knew Li Ni would accept her gift of this portrait because Li Ni never knew his mother. A picture of his mother is all he need. Xu Kai works well with older partner maybe because he himself a bit like old person. He can resonate his mind well with the likes like Yang Mi, Zhang Rong Rong, Jing Tian, Wu Jin Yan. He also performed well in parents-child scenes in each of his dramas.

Consort Xiao and Prime Minister Gu really have great characters. Upstanding, worthy of their reputation and position. I really like the part where Li Ni asked Cui Lin to take care of Consort Xiao.
