It’s such a huge red flag. People here asking the ML to take the first step do not realize how important it is that she should first admit that she loves him and accept him as her boyfriend. If she is not even ready to do that why should he even consider her? That is basic requirement for a relationship to succeed

It is very clear that they were both attracted to each other and clearly belong together but the dense FL is the only one who is confused about her feelings. Shi Yan would never have gone further if he was not clear about her interest. He was hesitant but finally took the step only to be disappointed and miserable in the end solely because of her confused behavior. He tried to overlook a lot of things. In spite of that this is how it ended
