The whole thing has strong fan-fiction vibes. I think the writer of story is a fantasist trying to do gritty reality, but unable to actually incorporate plausibility, and that’s fine. It disrupts my immersion, so the stakes dissolve, but I think it works as a reality-flavoured fairytale. I think I prefer minor-adult romance to be fairytales anyway. It has no place in reality.

I think that Jay figured out Sun is his Teddybear when he threw down the coins for the cigarette. The dismissive payment is just like that of the Teddybear. Even if he didn’t know for sure, he had a means to find out his name, and later about the ink, so uncertainty wouldn’t last long. Three people saw Sun topless is the studio, and if Pakin is a crony of Jay’s he might even know about the sun tattoo, and be on the lookout for it. If he isn’t Jay could ask the manager if he had any tattoos.

For those thinking His Highness, the emperor’s heir apparent, is his son, if he were his son he wouldn’t be referred to as heir apparent. He’d be heir. He’ll be the younger brother who doesn’t treat Aji like family. The subtitles saying “father” when the heir apparent addresses Aji will be a mis-application of the word “Sire.” In English sire has two uses. When used as a noun it means “father”. To have sired a child is an extension verb for that usage. When Sire is capitalised and used as a title it means something like “Your Majesty”, used to refer to or address the head of the ruling house.
This feels like a Sino-safe heterosexualised BL to me. It’s so romantic. I haven’t finished though. I’m at episode 21, after Ximeng saved Aji, at the point where they’re marking his birthday, in a suspiciously royal manner. Ximeng is so naïve.
