Everything shifts with the realization that it is a free for all for who will be the FL in this "story". Instead of being passive, the characters change the story with self determination. The author did challenge her to see if she could do better. Now is her chance to see if she can "write her own story". I am having fun with this and adore the ML character.

No offense, am I the only one who believes that Hua Ruyue is as much or more to blame than Bai Jiusi for all that…
I also think she is just as guilty of her son's death, after all she caused all that chaos by repeatedly intervening to save the Meng Family, while Bai Jiusi had to clean up her mess, she always said “I won't do it again” and did it again, I see it as double standard, she was the first one to not keep her word, but I don't see anyone talking about it.

Synopsis is on the spoiler below because it's quite long and kind of a spoiler on how the plot unfolds...
On Mount Zhaoyao, a gray-eyed girl named Bu Nian is protected by the mountain’s goddess due to her unique constitution. She rescues a gravely injured and amnesiac general, Xue Yiyang, and the two fall in love. But in order to heal Xue Yiyang, Bu Nian makes a great vow to the goddess, at the cost of Xue Yiyang having to leave Mount Zhaoyao.
Bu Nian descends the mountain in search of him and finds the now-amnesiac Xue Yiyang again, but he mistakes her for a spy and distances himself. Silently, she stays by his side and cares for him, and their love rekindles. When Xue Yiyang is ordered to suppress a rebellion, Bu Nian foresees the danger and disguises herself as a man to follow the army. She repeatedly uses her prophetic ability to help him, but suffers backlash as a result.
After their victorious return, Xue Fu, Xue Yiyang’s brother, kidnaps Bu Nian to exploit her power. That night, Xue Yiyang regains all his memories and, determined to make amends, rescues her. Enraged by failure, Xue Fu launches a fiery assault on Mount Zhaoyao. To save Bu Nian, the goddess forces Xue Yiyang to vow eternal love to her.
In the face of danger to her people, Bu Nian awakens the ancestral power in her blood—she was born to protect her tribe. With Xue Yiyang trying to stop her, Bu Nian tearfully erases his memory once again. She transforms into the Spirit Tree of the Enchanted Valley, guiding her people to safety, while choosing to live on as one with the mountain.

And as i mentioned they have too much baggage already, discarding everything someone else has done, they have already done as much to themselves as the villains.

This has to be sad ending right? I can't see anyway to get satisfactory ending at this point without sad ending being part of it. Them solving all this baggage in 7 episodes and get happy ending would feel like such a cop out.

The next episode will reveal the villain, if the villian was revealed on time the story would have ended but rather the person was waiting for the perfect time, we did get a glimpse of the villian. Like I mentioned let's see how it goes maybe it will be a happy ending or sad one it's up to the director. The drama was cut down too hence this and the director doesn't want to rush the back story ofc we can agree to disagree.
I also think the writers main focus was not romance rather angsty one.
