Okay so:1- I can't bring myself to ship the two leads at all. I love Jaehyun, he did great job, especially since…
Sorry for late reply, I just got online and I wrote a whole essay I know lmao thanks for bothering to read some of it, and am glad my comment was helpful. Yeah I also can't handle childish FL characters, but to be fair some of the other characters were highly likeable, and there were some nice elements about the drama which is why I still gave it a high rating. The thing that bothered me the most was the FL though, and I wasn't a fan of the leads honestly. So if one day you're so bored and have nothing better to watch you can still check it out.
Nice story, a welcome change from super rich chaebol heirs, but it left me somehow sad and frustrated - is Korea…
That's how Asia like, they are more on the conservative side. It's normal for them to not have sex or stuff of the sort until months later of dating even if they are adults and they also don't rush to go to each other houses even if they live alone (Not with their parents/family I mean), according to what I heard in a video talking about this exact topic before, it's because many of them date in hope to start a serious relationship that could lead to marriage in future and that's why they prefer to take their time to develop proper feelings before reaching the lust part.
Even when it comes to their sex education, it's more on the mild side compared to USA and Europe and the way females are viewed in Asia is a bit old minded (As in they mostly are not really viewed positively if they behave in a liberate non docile manner and be honest about their desires...same with guys kinda since they will worry about being viewed as perverts and creeps by women) so yeah, most Asian shows won't have heavy sexual scenes unless you search for the mature genre, and even their mature movies and shows that do include sex scenes and mature subjects aren't really that explicit compared to western ones honestly lol they don't talk openly about sex and the entertainment industry is heavily monitored by the public so the celebrities and shows could easily get cancelled for the stupidest reasons sometimes not gonna lie.
To you it might be weird but that's one of the greatest reasons I prefer Asian shows over western ones, I think mostly focusing on feelings rather than sexual content is much better and way more romantic. It doesn't matter if the main leads don't have a sex scene or even a kiss scene by the end of a drama, as long as they have chemistry and their moments together are great then it's good enough for me. Especially when western shows tend to rush the sex/one night stands in the beginning and then bother remembering that some feelings should exist as well.
I said the exact same things you said and did also mention that I loved Semantic Error meanwhile I don't like…
Honestly when I read review I never bother with the high rating ones, I always check out the ones with lowest ratings because lots of times they help me truly realize if a drama will be enjoyable to me or not when the ones writing them mention the negative things about the plot and characters.
Like for example if they mention a very annoying love triangle, awful FL character, overly rushed ending, medicore acting...etc I most of the time just don't watch the drama lol
While the high rating reviews are mostly written by people who are a hardcore fans of the actors or whatever so their judgment gets clouded by their obsession.
And yes when I tell others that I have all rights to tell my opinion since this is why this website was created in first place they all just start grumbling lmao
I said the exact same things you said and did also mention that I loved Semantic Error meanwhile I don't like…
Oh, that happened to me tons of times, I have even got cursed and called awful stuff (Some would even go as far as telling me to die, kill myself...etc over a stupid show) but I never stop lmao I don't care how popular and great others believe a show is, if I see flaws I will address them, I won't ask others to forcibly agree with me or change their taste to please me, but I also have the right to share my honest opinion and talk about what bothers me, even if it somehow makes me harsh or an enemy/hater figure to in their eyes. If others dislike shows that I like, I accept it too, cause that's their right.
Same will happen in Kpop fandoms, you dislike a certain song or don't become a stan of some group without hating on them or anything, just try to mind your own business and yet they will decide to crucify you online cause you don't allow them to control your mindset like a freaking cult.
Them acting that way over a show just shows how mentally ill they are being, cause no matter how much you like a show, song, band or whatever you should never go that far to defend it/them, you can argue and exchange opinions, or try to fix misunderstandings, but not insult someone personally and be utterly cruel and disrespectful.
Its just me but the girl the CP married is really irritating. That overly peppy attitude makes me find her annoying…
Yeah many people will find that type of overly weird and different character cute and likeable, which is why the writers made her that way I assume, but to me they ruined it completely. Especially for a historical plot.
Such a woman will never be a proper ruler, and know how to behave and talk properly when needed, especially when there is chaos in the kingdom/palace, she can't even hold herself from going all out in front of others nor when she is pregnant to avoid something bad happening to her...she acts like a child/crazy teen fangirl all the time. I mean when the servants and low birth women behave more elegant and classy than the noble crown princess, that's a tragedy in the making there lmao
10/10 I had lots of question after watching episode 15, but am glad they answered all of them in episode 16 and made sure to give everyone, including support characters a proper ending.
Glad the queen dowager finally went to hell so that no one will have to deal with her bullshit anymore. All the hatred and crap she done all because she was too salty for not being able to attain the queen position...like seriously!
I'm also glad that the king turned out to be a decent man and did the right thing. His relationship with the queen was a great example of a prefect married couple. They one 100% respect, trust, and support each other. They deeply care about their kids and even after the king found out that prince Uiseong wasn't his child, he still didn't hate him for it, and he was understanding enough to let that prince who has a daughter marry his non-noble lover. And the fact he is caring about his daughter that much, since I know during old eras in the world females were mostly viewed as a burden and everyone wished for sons instead, it was great to see him all happy over her birth.
the queen's character was one of the most well written and amazing female characters and character overall I ever came across in a drama. She was a marred middle aged woman, with many teen sons, not the typical teen/young adult FL character which was a great change. She is a perfect mother, wife, and ruler. Loved everything about her.
For the first time I watch a historical drama that didn't have any boring episodes/moment at all. All episodes kept you entertained and focused all the time till the end with the fast pace, and non messed up writing. The fact that they also made some representations like the whole transgender thing was also cool.
Also the fact that most princes decided to live outside the palace was great cause that way the will be able to live the way they want and desire instead of staying trapped till death in that pretty and decorated cage (Palace). Especially the trans princess (The prince who feels like a woman inside), she was finally able to be herself and travel the world. Her paintings were nice.
Also consort Hwang deserved what happened to her for being too greedy which lead to both her and her son misery. I guess she lost it, and I see some people even saying she went blind, but I'm not sure if she is really blind or not.
Only thing about the drama that bothered me and almost made me give it a less than 10 rating was the cringe ass romance between the crown prince and princess, the crown princess is the only character I wished didn't exist in the plot due to how much her personality and behavior pissed me off till the last minute in the show. I mean the queen dowager was a bitch, but her existence in the plot was important and she was a very powerful character/villain. Her being evil made sense for the plot, but the crown princess having that personality and behaving like a retard wasn't necessary at all. She is a noblewoman yet acted like a crazy villager with low blood, like seriously...both her sisters were normal, even the palace servants were more elegant and classy while she just act and talk in a disturbing way, runs around all day long on streets and in the palace like an untamed animal for no good reason (While she is pregnant as well to make it more annoying).
I get that they wanted her to be unique and different from other girls in that era or something of the sort...but that didn't work at all for me. A good unique character will be like the queen. Yeah she has times when she lose her temper and runs around to solve issues mostly related to her sons being brats which can be funny, but even during such moments she was still respectful, elegant, badass with great sense of humor.
Even prince Muan? (Is that the name of the grand prince who has a daughter?), his lover/wife who is non noble and even worked as a prostitute basically, was way more elegant, behaved, and acted noble like more than the crown princess like really?! And the crown princess lying about them not having sex...was still odd to me even though she explained it. Yeah I hated her with passion lmao To be fair they barley had screen time so I decided to ignore it and give the drama full rating.
Loved the bond between the grand princes, they all loved and cared for each other and no one of them was selfish. I guess the youngest grand prince is supposed to be the genius kid the family who everyone assume is crazy at first but later on ends up creating something outstanding, which finally makes others acknowledge his talent lol
Its just me but the girl the CP married is really irritating. That overly peppy attitude makes me find her annoying…
Just finished the drama and yes, I 100% agree. I couldn't like her since the moment she showed up till the last episode. She is the only character I genuinely couldn't stand the existence of. To me her personality is not cute and funny at all, and her behavior is totally unfitting for a crown princess/next queen.
Okay so apparently the crown prince and princess actually had sex that night and she is pregnant for sure and either that:
1- Crown princess lied about it for some odd reason, cause she literally didn't need to do so at all. I highly doubt she would lie with how open she is and it doesn't make sense.
2- She supposedly didn't know herself?! I mean I get that happening for a guy but a girl? And a virgin girl even? Like how come a girl can wake up after sex and doesn't realize something is different about her body, see blood (I know not all girls bleed from first time), or feels some pain or anything?! Even if it's not a virgins girl, it still doesn't make any sense.
Also she knows she is ill which makes her being pregnant more hard, and instead of 100% resting she decides to wake up every morning to run around the palace like a wild horse?! I mean really? How come she always make trouble for the prince and everyone...all cause she wanted to see him? Really? She sees him every fucking day and he literally be reading her bedtime stories and she is still horny over him and willing to risk miscarry for it lmao
Anyway episode was packed as hell. I guess consort Hwang and her son will die or something as punishment since queen dowager reveled their secrete to the queen. Consort Hwang thought she was smart, yet she ended up getting stuck between the queen and queen dowager lol poor bitch.
I know my answers will probably be answered in episode 16 but it's too late to watch it today in my country lol
Okay finished the drama and there are many things that bothered me about the characters. Not hating on the drama,…
Okay so:
1- I can't bring myself to ship the two leads at all. I love Jaehyun, he did great job, especially since it's his debut drama and the FL is also doing a very good job playing her role. Now still even though the kiss scene in Episode 9 was great. I don't feel that crazy chemistry at all.
Also the whole fact that Min Ho spent 12 years treating Joo Ah as a friend/sister, while dating many girls during that time, not showing an actual interest in her and even crushing on the rich computer engineering girl in their collage. All that time Joo Ah was single and the moment she finally shows some interest in a guy other than him, he finally has an epiphany and decide he likes her?! I'm sorry but if I was in the FL's place and my friend does that crap, I would be fucking pissed off, why?
Cause it feel selfish and childish as hell! I mean it's just like when a single mother decides to remarry or date some guy and then her child throws tantrums and get all pissed over it, cause he doesn't want to share his mother's attention with someone else. That exactly how it feels to me.
ML didn't even bother figuring out his feelings for her since before they became adults, he just dated girls around, so it's not the being in love with your childhood friend since you two were very young, but being shy about it trope. No, he literally admitted that he himself finds it odd that after all these years he finally realized that he likes her. When it seemed like she wouldn't be 100% free to waste all her time and attention on him and only him anymore.
Even when she tried to get close to that fake ass jerk oppa (Actor is sexy as fuck though, sadly his character was shit), ML got all clingy and annoying by chasing them everywhere to ruin their dates, dragging that rich girl with him giving her false messages. That shit angered me. He did the same thing the jerk senior did to the FL by leading her on, making her think he was into her, then turns out he wasn't at all.
ML also fooled rich girl, even making her confess to him, then was like "Yeah, sorry, but I like someone else..." so both of him and the senior are jerks honestly. If it was me, I would fucking reject his ass so hard, I wouldn't give two fucks about the 12 years friendship shit anymore.
And he picked one hell of a shit time to confess his feelings to her, when she made it clear that she likes another guy, then got her heart broken, ML then pop out of nowhere and be like "I like you!" like what was he expecting her to do? Smile? Be happy and flattered? Or falls for him on the spot? Couldn't he at least give her some time to get over her heartbreak over the senior at least?!
2- FL personality is kinda shitty. She can be awfully dumb, meek, and childish at times. Like that time when that guy tried t rape her, I mean the moment a stranger guy be like "Oh, lets eat somewhere out of college" you go out with him and then all of a sudden he switches from walking on a main street to some shady ass neighborhood and then a dark alley, that is the moment a girl should turn and run away full speed without saying a word, before he gets a chance to sort out his thoughts. As soon as he switches from a main road, that is your signal to flee. I wouldn't even go to such shady places with a guy I know let alone a total stranger.
Instead she just stands there looking around like a dense child, then when he makes it painfully clear that he was planning to do something bad she waste some time staring at him while standing there. Then of course the male characters end up having to save her ass and search for her, and when ML finds her she start crying like a toddler. Then he gets all guilty over her stupidity and shuts down the app he worked hard to make because of her. She is a freaking adult, I would get it if she was an actual kids and he lured her with candy or something. Even I back when I was a kid I wouldn't even allow my mother's friends touch me let alone go with a stranger away from her. Why? Cause I was taught well to not trust strangers, and as adult I know that I got to be careful all the time.
It reminds of me rape/crime cases happening in/near night clubs or bars...etc like what do you think could happen when you go to such places that are filled with drunk, wasted fucks everywhere and get yourself drunk and vulnerable there? Or go out with one of them to their apartment or something later in night for a one night stand? There is obviously some crazy prick who might try to do something heinous to you if he can, DUH! And it could lead to the girl getting murdered even.
Also how come when ML was calling her million times at the moment she was facing the creep her phone vibration wasn't audible, but when he called her back after she called him, when she was hiding behind cars, the vibration noise could be heard 3 miles away and it exposed her location to the stalker?!
They also show ML constantly having to take care of her, scolding her at times...etc all cause she is clumsy and childish...I hate this overly innocent and naïve female character trope they love to use in Asian dramas. Basically teen or adult female characters with infant brains fetish that seems to be a going on, that means that ML gotta always act like her dad, make decisions for her, and protect her all the time. Cause she is busy getting herself in trouble and danger everyday, instead of using her brain, or having a real personality.
Also why they made the FL clothes always ugly? I get she is poor and supposed to be the simple/plain looking childhood friend type and all, but being poor doesn't mean she gotta wear clothes that make her look like an old woman...like seriously some of her outfit seem as if she was sharing clothes with her grand grandmother. Everyone else looked fine and had nice outfits except her. Even the older characters had normal styles.
3- Now about the magnet couple: First off them showing off their relationship like a brand was wrong, cause it lead to gaining too much unwanted attention and people talking shit online all the freaking time.
second: I get how Jimin feels and think, but I think the only thing that truly bothered me about her that before she breaks up with Haneul she didn't tell him the shit Ro Sa told her about liking him. She should've told him so he can understand how much of a trash Ro Sa is, instead of letting him stay believing that she is a decent person. I loved that she confronted Ro Sa early on, but still she should also be honest with her boyfriend about everything that bothers her instead of letting him in the dark like a dumbass.
Third: Haneul, like I loved how always apologized, and tried his best to be a good and sweet boyfriend. He even treated Jimin brother very well even after their break up and basically became friend with Ro Sa cause she is Jimin's friend. But the moment the stupid misunderstandings and Jimin getting paranoid and upset every time he hang out with Ro Sa started, he should've just started to 100% ignore Ro Sa.
He only befriended her for Jimin's sake anyway, so why still hang out with her a lot?! To make it worse that time when he lied about being in lab and spent time in Ro Sa's apartment, instead of just telling Jimin the truth about what he was doing, like really?! He really thought that shit was okay?
If Jimin was the one hanging out with another guy, be it his friend or not, in his apartment, them being alone with each other, after tons of misunderstandings happening between them even and Jimin lied about it to make it more suspicious, wouldn't he get pissed off and maybe even beat up the other dude over it? He didn't need to lie, people only lie when they try to hide something bad. That part really made me upset.
The other guy Yi Dam, he is so straightforward, honest, cute, and I love it, but sometimes he gives a bit of a red flag with him acting a bit too obsessive and trying overly hard to be perfect for Jimin. Like he is just focusing on her, her opinion and wishes, kinda neglecting his own identity in the process. At least he didn't try to go for her while she was in a relationship like Ro Sa did with Haneul.
4- I love Young and Mok Jin, they are the only couple I really like and got no negative things to say about at all. Also Mok Jin is very good looking so I hate how they made it seem as he isn't attractive at all, yeah maybe compared to Jaehyun, Haneul and that senior Moon Joon guy, he isn't the hottest, but he is still very attractive with a nice smile. and him being so clean is a great trait. He is responsible, funny, friendly, loyal, and cheerful. He even learned about Young's condition to help when needed, and doesn't act like a creep around girls.
Overall the drama is very enjoyable, although some parts are a bit too boring. But it's still a nice drama to chill while watching. Also it has strong fluff teen high school drama vibe. They are adults in college, drinking and all, but everything gives a high school pure teen romance feels to me. I wish it was more mature, I guess? Since college dramas are rare compared to high school ones, and am already tired of teen rom coms, so I was expecting something a bit more mature and dark I suppose? I don't know.
By the way when FL was about to go to that interview thing for the sport announcer position and Jimin and Young decided to help her dress up...they put a shit load of make up tools and shit and after all that she ended up looking the fucking same as before they done anything. And the hairstyle? It was just a normal ass ponytail, yet they acted as if they done something grand.
Reminds me of when they talk about celebrities on red carpet who supposedly spent hours on make up and hairstyling, wasting a shit load of money hiring people to do it for them with top make up and hair products, all to end showing up looking as if they got no make up to begin with and with a very bland hairstyle that they easily could do home on their own. That shit irks me lmao
EDIT: Finished the drama and well, most of my opinions didn't change:
1- I still can't ship the two leads, they don't have that much chemistry and their love feels forced and sudden. Still not a fan of the whole "Oh, I fell for you suddenly when you fell for some random guy" concept, but to be fair, the ML didn't try too hard to shove his love into the FL throat, and respected her wish when she told him to stop hitting on her, allowing her to be more comfortable, and he never done abusive behavior like drag her around, grab her arm forcefully, , yell at her for it, or whatever bullshit ML characters tend to do in most Kdramas whenever they are jealous or FL refuse to accept their love. So overall Min Ho wasn't toxic to me, just a bit childish and annoying I guess about his love to FL.
Also this drama has an issue that to others might not be that big of an issue but to me it bothers me a lot which is when the ML looks way prettier and good looking than female lead. Like Jaehyun is a stunning man, it would feel a bit better and more logical if he acts with an equally stunning actress. I also hate it when FL is way way more good looking than ML in other cases. Especially when they are the lead characters. Lead couple should be as perfect together as possible since they got the most screen time and focus, unless they go for the "Attractive person falls for non attractive average person" concept, in that case sure I guess, I would let it pass.
But lots of times both the two leads will supposedly be considered stunning in the plot, but you look at them to realize that one of them (Be it male or the female) look average to death while the other gender is truly stunning, and that makes me feel odd. Same when one of the characters is supposedly to be ugly, but they cast a hot actor/actress for the role, make them wear a glasses and some nerdy outfits which are supposed to make them ugly, but obviously they still look hot, and you sit there not knowing how you're supposed to react.
2- I think Jimin and Haneul getting back together makes sense, I felt bad for Yi Dam, but it fits. Wish Jimin also apologized for hiding too much of her emotions from Haneul too, but anyway.
3- Young and Mook Jin are a perfect couple, I love them a lot!
4- I think Moon Joon's ending made sense, I hope he really learned his lesson and would rely on himself from then on.
5- I hated Ro Sa's ending, she done soo many bad things and yet no one knows about it, I wanted her to be revealed in front of the whole college so she will have to drop out with shame cause everyone despise her guts, instead she just "moved on" as if she done nothing wrong at all and continued college normally. That irked me so bad.
6- The wedding scene was cute, loved the dance part and the speech of Min Ho actually made me tear up a bit. But, the bride's dress was one of the ugliest and most bland looking wedding dresses I have ever seen. I wouldn't even wear it for going on a picnic let alone my wedding day, and again Joo Ah suit that she wore in the wedding was heinous looking. I have seen old women/literal hags characters in Kdramas that wear suits that are 1000000000 times more pretty.
They done Joo Ah dirty with the outfits they picked for her. She also deserved a better hairstyle and make up since the actress herself is cute enough (To be honest, she is the least pretty among all main female cast and not that pretty looking for an actress to me personally. But she is still cute overall. I'm not saying she is ugly or anything just more on the average side), but they made sure to make her look as bland as possible on purpose, while all other actresses looked gorgeous with proper make up, hairstyles, and clothes that made their beauty shine.
7- The Dear.M reveal was anticlimactic as hell honestly and I could guess who was it the last episode after Min Ho said it wasn't him. I Instantly was like Mook Jin? And they revealed it was him indeed. It would be better if they didn't reveal his identity honestly at that point cause it was both boring and predictable. Would be better to be a random character instead.
Overall I enjoyed the drama, most characters were likeable and they felt realistic with their actions and mindsets. I hope they make more similar dramas in future, and cast Jaehyun in more other dramas with different genres.
Okay finished the drama and there are many things that bothered me about the characters. Not hating on the drama, actors, or plot, just the characters behavior and decisions.
"You're like my mom, you remind me of my mom" I mean I get what he was getting at, but I still shuddered a bit hearing that lmao glad that Vincent pointed it out to him. It was still a cute confession though.
Merry Christmas!
