Actually, the character in the series is more humane than in the book.

Sorry if it contains spoiler, but actually it's my conclusion after having watched it until that door arc.

Li Dongyuan's death is really the most heartbreaking moment .

His personality would improve later.

He trusted people easily and always treated them kindly.
He thought that people would treat him just like the way he treated him, presumably because he didn't have any good friends except for Gao Dawei and Wu Qi.

Perhaps this personality was due to his childhood experience.

But, at some points, I do agree that sometimes his naivety is a bit annoying.

As for the kaleidoscope, it should have been one of the hints that left for him to remind him about his childhood friend [Gao Dawei]

He brought the kaleidoscope, then was taken by the girl and he was reluctant to take it back due to his awkwardness and soon forgot about it.

Sometimes his mind was too simple and complicated at the same time which makes us the viewers can't help to sigh..
'What the hell man, why can't you be more assetivt towards that person?'

That deadly frame was indeed projected to Jiushi's room because he was targeted by Xia Jie's person.

That frame only worked if it was projected directly to the person.

The mechanism is a bit different from the paintings, but the effect is the same, trapping the person inside the painting and resulted in death.

Actually, there are 2 kinds of viewers' understanding about this series :

1. The majority opinion is that the whole journey is just Ling Jiushi's dream during his comatose state after getting into car accident.

2. The minority opinion is that this whole thing really happened inside the game world as it is stated as unlimited flow genre [survival journey]

So, to answer your question, based on my personal understanding, it is not a dream. [I'm part of the minority]

There are many clues and hints that showed it is not a dream at all.

The scary parts are still bearable, not as scary as horror movies.

1. After passing the first door, because LJS helped to solve the chief leader's family problem, he made the first door disappear and all doors setting was re-shuffled [RLZ explained this after the first door and when they just entered the second door]

2. Each player will enter the doors but in a random time and setting. For example, player A first door might be in different setting from Player B's first door.
Player A's first door might be player B's second or third door.

[On the first and second door, when each player introduced themselves, some were newcomers, while others were not.]

3. As for RLZ's experience who had crossed 10 doors, there is explanation for it, but it contains spoilers of the further episodes.
