sorry for butting in but i think what they meant by a female character was not the importance of female characters but the lack of a female counterpart to the male lead, i.e. a heterosexual couple >.< (which is well...yikes)
yeah wyb was extremely impressive in cql. i remember watching Gank your Heart right before cql and i had no idea at that point that the male lead (wyb) was in cql as well. So while i wasn't really that impressed with the show, i did find him cute. And then i saw him in cql and all thoughts of his role in GYH flew out of my head. He BECAME lwj. it was such a beautiful experience to watch him portray lwj on my screen.
although my knowledge of c-actors is limited, i agree that xiao zhan embodied wwx in a way no one else could have done. his love for wei wuxian is pretty evident.
tenuous isn't being used to describe wwx but his place in jiang family. i think he always had a place in the jiang clan as jc's right hand man and that's all he wanted to be but then stuff happened and wwx realized his poisition as jc;'s right hand man was not that secure afterall

the family wasn't insane but it was definitely dysfunctional and that impacted wwx. but yeah i agree that he wasn't attracted to lwj because of that but instead lwj's stableness is just a part of him that wwx grew to love and seek comfort in.
one thing that really bothers me is the lack of reaction on SDM's part regarding the letters reveal. she cried about it for 0.2 seconds and went back to being all lovey-dovey with NDS. i mean, does it makes sense that she was head over heels in love with HJP for so long, thought NDS was HJP for a good portion of their few months long relationship and then did. not. even. have. one. proper. conversation. about. it..? wouldn't you be curious? about the boy you were in love with for 15 years? even if not in a romantic sense, she could have at least tried to get to know him and his motivations. abysmal writing.
