The novel is female-centeric. But readers wanted more of Zhao Ling situation so I don't think the screenwriter added his storyline in the drama just bc of the actor. As a reader myself I wished the drama would focus on his pov and it did though not exactly in the way I wanted. Both in the novel and in the drama, they are a power couple. They support each other and take care of each other. ZL's pov was limited bc he was mostly on the frontier and away from capital. Whenever TY came across a problem, she would always send a letter to him to inform him and get his feedback. I love this couple so much, whether drama version or the novel version. :)

But then he asked her directly about YJX and TY's answer made him less uncomfortable with his thoughts. He knows YJX is not a worthy guy. He was only comparing himself with his background. YJX had a strong family backing him. He never had concerns regarding safety or a full stomach or being chased after by other outlaws. It's not like ZL had low self-esteem. If he had, he would never have achieved things he has achieved till now. His concern was sth else which I mentioned.
