It was really such a shame. I had so many complaints because I loved the novel so much, but the screenwriter just didn't want to use the source material as much...

Nonetheless, I liked the drama. Not because of the script, but because of the acting and directing.

I had bonded with the characters. 😭💖

I liked the chemistry there and I liked his Shen Du but I didn't like the script. In my opinion, it was a messy script with a messy editing.
Unlike TRTS, MOGA is more romance focused. The romance was slow-burn and there is an annoying third wheel in the drama. Haha.
But there are people who loved it more than TRTS.
It's just my opinion. You might like it.

For your first question, I think it was a twin.

I don't remember Zhang Ruipu being alive on the ship but I remember the dead people Haixia saw alive were his hallucinations bc of Twilight Grass poisoning.

And Haixia got on the ship at the next stop/port.

As a Daomubiji fan, seeing these young and clumsy Zhang clan members was quite refreshing. Their master is more Zhang coded and it's because she's lived longer.
These two are orphans taken in. And quite young in their career as Zhang clan members.
The drama's mystery was interesting and I got some of my questions regarding Zhang family answered. But the most interesting thing for me was their emotional bond.
It's a side story. And they'll meet some Mystic Nine members.
At least try to watch the first 4 eps then decide if you like it or not.

Oh the acting made the episode more heart-breaking. I was sobbing 😭

The script of this one was so messy. I watched it for DYX's acting and then I liked the chemistry and slow-burn romance.
After they got together, I lost interest and fast forwarded to the end. 🤣

Zhang Qiling is the patriarch of Zhang clan. He's the most mysterious guy in the whole franchise.
In the original story, he become friends with Wu Xie and Pangzi and together they make an Iron Triangle group and go on tomb raiding adventures together. 💖

Regarding Shifu's death, I think that was part of Haixia's plan to force Hailou to kill him. Haiqi was never really dead. That's why ZQL could revive her. Just like how Zhang Haixia wasn't really dead on that ship.

And that right-sided heart, it's only known that Hailou has a right-sided heart. Not Haixia. Haixia had that extraordinary sense of smell instead.
There are other clues about him not being dead.
Anyway, it's an open ending. You can interpret as you like.

Regarding script, production, direction, and acting, this one is far better.

While Melody of Golden Age is more focused on romance, The Road to Splendor is much more character and plot driven. The characters go through realistic, relatable life experiences, and there's a lot of angst from eps 30 to 33, but the ending is satisfying, and every character ultimately faces the consequences of their actions.

This drama has a message and a lesson to convey. So it's not all sweet and heartwarming. You'll get some sweetness and butterflies, sure, but you'll also feel mad, frustrated, heartbroken, and so much more.
