I think Li Mao was always secretly ambitious he just had no path to the throne. This was clear when he repeatedly chose to stay on in his current role and prove himself when it is clear he can already leave with Jiayu if he so chooses. It has been one excuse after another - we are now at the I will leave with you after the peace accord phase. Xie Huaigui doesn’t have to get his way and I seriously don’t want to watch any of those kinds of tired tropes that is why I have skipped so many idol dramas this year. I want the drama to focus on how Jiayu’s battlefield innovations helps Wuyi whoop the ass of the Northern Qi.

Well the director/writer did go a very different and refreshing direction in how Wuyi's harem is written. And in China, there is building excitement about this drama, many excitedly predicting it will be this summer's dark horse hit. But we have a long way to go still and all that momentum will fade if Li Mao wastes tons of screentime playing your typical delusional SML that kidnaps and forces the FL to marry him. I would rather they focus on Merxat and the Eagle King and how the FL helps the ML defeat Northern Qi with her ingenious inventions instead of rehashing tired love tropes.

Maybe you are right but that would make him exactly the same kind of SML as the one in The Last Jasmine and practically every recent drama. One can (and should) always hope they break that stereotype. Besides, the Grand Tutor does NOT want him to marry Jiayu. He thinks that will turn him into a love brain and undermine his ambition. I am going to root for a different outcome. Poor Riley Wang has played that role so many times - he may have had the good sense to choose one that is not like that this time around.
