Yeah its all about traffic. The subscription model doesn't work in China - people who can afford to pay work too long hours and have no time to watch so they don't subscribe. And there is huge youth unemployment -like around 25pct - they are your watchers. They have no money so their views are paid by advertisers and they chase traffic actors - they will watch almost anything as long as their idols are in it. So all the idol actors are bankable bc they get the views. Serious actors like ZRY's dramas can't drop bc they are expensive and right now the consumer downturn in China is so bad that advertisers are not willing to pay/invest in it. So the platforms are holding back on these high priced projects with more expensive actors.

I only tried 1 episode of that and I am not sure if I will continue. Idk if Xu Kai is dubbing himself but his lines are not great and they don't match his lip movement. Zhou Ye sounds like she is dubbing herself and at least her lines are clear I don't need to read the Chinese subs to understand her. Also they know each other already with no buildup of how that happened. I will ty a few more episodes this weekend but its not promising IMO.

I have the exact same issue with how in one of the dynasties that most strictly segregated men from women this was possible. Even Qian Shaoze and Jiugao had to cross dress and go to great lengths to infiltrate the women's quarters. The elders in the Lin family are on to the Dus but they have not upped their vigilance sufficiently IMO.
