Nah, the book was terrible and unadaptable, the drama plot is better but still not great. I think the story peaked too early and IMHO the story should have ended with the last arc. This Xiyan arc feels like a tack on arc to get another couple of episodes out of the story.

Of course - Mdm Chen was the most resentful bc she already married down into Luo family but she thought as she was marrying the 1st master, she would at least be head of the household. As it turns out he was even less successful than 2nd master and now his second wife a rich merchants daughter is lording it over her as the head of the household.

Tastes are always very subjective and AYTO did shockingly well IMO with Chinese viewers bc of WCR who is very beautiful whereas Ren Min is not the current idol beauty standard and has been panned (again) for her looks . But I think she looks a lot better with ZWY bc she is so petite whereas WCR looks big besides him. And she is a modern beauty she has big features that make her better suited to play a peasant girl in ancient period dramas. Whereas Ren Min looks like she walked right off an ancient Chinese painting of a highborn Classical Chinese beauty with her delicate and elegant features. As others have pointed out this has better plot overall while AYTO is a better romance. Different things appeal to different audiences.

It does of course but until he has been at his post longer and established more relationships he won’t have done enough favors or made enough connections to get anyone a good official position. It’s best he avoids hiring him directly that would be blatant nepotism so he’d have to recommend him to someone with influence who he has good relationships with.

I think it’s more than that unfortunately as I replied above.. The Luos continue to recognize the Chen children so the scandal will fade they are not long term impacted. Qiao committed the lesser crime but looks like her kids may be banished like LYN was. Their future is really uncertain at this point.

This is a genre written in the tradition of Dream of the Red Chamber. It is always about a middling official family that is past its glory days to the point that even merchants families look down upon them as they cling to what’s left of their status by their fingernails. This is a recurring theme of this drama and others in this genre. While technically it’s true that merchants are lower status, the Luos are in no position to do anything for the Lin’s advancement even if their son can pass the exams. He is no great talent like LSY so passing doesn’t get him anywhere. He would just be a poor undistinguished scholar/academic which is same status as merchants and be able to tutor children of merchants and maybe minor officials families like the Luos for a living. They mean to buy him a wife whose father has enough influence to get a good official post. At this point in the story that is not Luo master 1 or 2 and not even LSY. Of course her mother’s crimes don’t help but they would have opposed long before her mother ‘s crimes surfaced. Her sister was very lucky indeed she married up slightly but not as well as their mother had initially hoped. It’s also why LJX made sure LYN was bestowed a county princess title. This makes LSY a bad match for her despite his talent but I think Duke Ying won’t care.
