There are many things about this I like better than Minglan but the main characters overall I don't. There are too many hidden identities and LSY is too perfect, too rich and too infallible whereas GTY as you point out was more flawed and multi-faceted. And LYN starts out smart and unfavored but turns out she is the legitimate daughter of a duke who was besotted with her mother no less! Whereas Minglan is who she is, simply the clever but unfavored daughter of a concubine who advances in life despite her birth. I am not saying this is a bad story but I just prefer good stories about common people. This recent trend of making everyone a hidden prince, princess or aristocrat really irritates me.

I only read the novel finale which culminated in a huge fight. Pei Yan was there too and the place twas rigged to blow similar to the drama But the emperor was trying to escape and Wei Zhao held him down to stop him while Pei Yan and the rest escaped down a tunnel. He didn't really have a choice and he never saw Jiang Ci again. I agree with you it was questionable directing or editing in the drama but the idea that he chose to stay when he promised Jiang Ci he would be back just didn't work for me.

I found Jiang Ci and Wei Zhao's dialogues in the latter part especially incredibly sad. In the thread, there were many complaints that they weren't being honest with each other. And maybe the nuances just didn't come across in the translation but they weren't really lying to each other, there was a lot more conveyed between the lines and in what was not said. All of their conversations focused on the present moment because they knew they had no future. I don't remember the lines anymore but it is like when one of them said it felt like they had already had a lifetime together on that swing when what they were really talking about was the life they would not have together.

I think the actor is doing a great job but the character is just icky. I wish like Story of Minglan, they gave her a real choice; a proper love rival that was maybe not perfect but not the worst choice either instead of such a big fat obvious no. What's the fun in that?
