Ok tyvm. I usually don't have to read subtitles but for this one I have to for some parts and I a bit slow and may have missed stuff.

While I understand that, this is a series made for the viewers, we should enjoy watching it.
I am just explaining why these stories are written this way, I didn't at all say not to enjoy it. 😅🤷🏻‍♀️

They changed the couple timeline. In the novel they don't meet until BDJ is put under house arrest by his dad.…
I didn't read the first part I only started from the YWJ bride snatching but when YY is talking to her maid about BDJ she remembers meeting him when he was 15 and mentions she is about 6 years older than him. There is a chapter about being famous that is titled 10 years later so its 10 years from when they first met. I also vaguely recall that they didn't publish the lists for 3 years before so he technically should have gotten it at 22 but he was 25 when that conversation took place.

Maybe these constant parallels are the reason for Zhou Zhifei's morbid obsession with Gu Yizhong. As if he sees…
Yeah I just think his hate for GYZ was never that well established. But its ok, I can go with it.

Well from what @FunnyBunny posted he seems to have been a controversial figure whose true loyalty was never fully understood. I think he must be in his 40s in the show which means his entire adult life was in troubled times. I think it’s not surprising for him to hate the Japanese but have few convictions and be mercenary and self interested.

Well in GYZ’s case it is ZZF who forced him to marry Haimo and they are adversaries in ZZF’s case it was his mentor Mr Liwjo made him do it.

They are very intimidating bc they are big, thick books. But she writes beautifully and she lived in such an interesting time in history that they are very immersive and before you know it you are at the end.

Oops my ancestors did too, but 50 years?! I didn’t know it was this long! Thanks for the insight. I watched…
Yes, they colonised about 25pct of China for 50 years. Although starting to die off, many people alive today still vividly remember those times including my and my friends' parents. All the Nanyang stories are also sad stories. Many excellent local SEA writers have written terrific books about the period. I think my parents would scoff in disbelief if you try to sneak a happy ending from this time pass them!

Han Suyin's works were biographical. She is a Eurasian, Chinese father and Belgian mother born in China - I think she is still alive but very old. She lived through the Cultural Revolution and through some of China's hardest times. I think she had at least 2 sad love stories bc in those times no one has HEA. I was 13 when I started reading her very long books bc my mom was her fan and had all of them so I don't really remember all the details clearly anymore. But I do remember she is a beautiful evocative writer.

Well I am not there yet but to me, he was a charismatic scumbag from the get go that switched sides according to how the wind blew. I didn't consider him an anti-hero, he seemed mostly all about himself.

Yes indeed, its a tough genre but if you understand it, you can maybe begin to understand why the China is the way it is today. I don't normally like sad/tragic endings but bc I read a lot of Pearl S Buck and Han Suyin when I was a teenager, I am ok with it. Both writers managed to explain the sadness in a very beautiful way.

I am still behind but I see a lot of upset posts. One of my best mainland Chinese friends, whose family survived these times once explained to me that it is a requirement that everyone has the worst possible outcome in Republican era dramas. It would be disrespectful to romanticise the period. The best ending you can give to a good character is to let them die bravely with honor and the next best thing is to let them lose everything that meant something to them. Because China went through 50 years of Japanese occupation and oppression, a hollow victory followed by another 4 decades of self inflicted internal turmoil and poverty. No one had a good ending unless they fled and abandoned their country like my ancestors obviously did. A good ending is a bad ending. Just remember that when you watch this genre and you will be A-OK.

Well in that case, she did what worked best for her. And when it no longer worked best for her she moved on. It makes sense and in those time, that is the only way to survive.

Awww thank you. I am glad you were able to finish and enjoy it. You and the hubby should definitely pick up S2…
I love Jin Yong but I never forgave him for pairing up his best heroine with Gui Jing. I thought that together with Yang Kang they would rule the world!😅😂

LLF is a so much better role than Guo Jing - he has brains and brawn. Even Jin Yong would be jealous . I half wish Tsui Hark would make another Detective Dee movie staring Yang Xuwen! But I like SWM as well - he is a much nicer version of Hercule Poirot!!!
