As for Kwok Ching unfortunately he is written to be dumb and good. He just has great martial arts foundation. That's why in Duel on Mount Hua he never really wins, Wong Yung helps him "cheat" and the elders let him. I have read the original novel too many times to count looking for that hidden brilliance but I am sad to tell you the 1983 characterisation is pretty much spot on. Jin Yong himself was very involved in the making and how the characters were conveyed. It was a huge deal for him bc it was the first time his books were made into drama in such a big way. The real brilliant tragic hero of Condor Heroes is actually Yeung Hong. It is why Condor Heroes is not the favorite of many Jin Yong fans who like complex heroes; they mostly prefer Kiu Fung or Yeung Kor's story.
I didn't watch the entire Yang Xuwen version bc Li Yitong just couldn't pull off Huang Rong for me. But I think he did the Guo Jing I liked the most without completely changing the character as it was written although Felix Wong's is probably still the most true to what Jin Yong wrote.

What I mean is this is just a story to us. But it is many people's reality that they lost a child that they will never find. It is very hard to end this in a way that doesn't diminish their pain or or give them false hope.

Do you even know the story and who the main couples are? The ML is 27 and the FL is 22 and the second leads are 25 and 26. There are only age gaps where the character is supposed to be older but the story flashes back to his younger days when his no longer around wife was young.

I think its more powerful that Xiaoqi and Wang Shitu's deep affection for each other does not need biological bonds. It is why he is so different from Lao Jin who is incapable of loving anyone who is not his own biological child.
I always felt that Doudou was a red herring and never expected him to be found. The biggest hint is all those lost kids in the end credits that have been lost and still not found decades later. This story is ultimately about them and it acknowledges all those poor parents who like Wang Shitu never stop looking. There have been many stories in the Chinese media however about DNA databases that in recent years have reunited many missing children with their parents so there is hope.
As for Wang Xiao Qi and Wang Shitu's ending, I think they have found each other. Xiao Qi has even taken his name. I am going to say from that ending scene that they will stay in close touch. But I don't think he is Doudou.The DNA test he did between Bian Meizhen and Xiao Qi probably showed Xiao Qi's blood type. He probably already saw that it didn't match Doudou's. Its a realistic ending, which is fitting for the theme of this story.
