Yeah but like boss most translators won't like to use it bc its not really correct. Master is actually correct but it just sounds awkward to you bc its kind of an antiquated English form of address whereas shifu is still widely used in Chinese as a form of respectful address especially in blue collar or skilled labor related professions like this. I even address my taxi driver as shifu occasionaly, esp when I want to discuss which route to take etc. Whereas laoshi or teacher is used in a similar context for professions where higher education is involved - like teachers but also doctors, engineers etc.

No it is a correct translation of a term of respect that is in common use to today to denote a mentor/master-apprentice relationship in their department. I'd just probably not translate it or use boss instead even though that is technically incorrect.

I find it really hilarious that the big bad company here is an internet company that does gaming among other things and has all the money in the world to hire consultants, high powered attorneys, manipulate the media etc. Because that sounds a whole lot like Tencent and this is of course a Tencent sponsored (alongside the People’s Court) tribute drama. It is like Tencent’s self criticism and mea culpa over all its regulatory misbehavior including causing gaming addiictiion among minors, violating data privacy, anti competitive behavior etc etc etc. that resulted in billions of dollars of fines in the last two years. And to add insult to the injury they have Pony Ma wearing borrowed trousers that are too short for him.

No of course not but the interactions just seem a lot more natural. Later on it went OTT when Wang Jinsong and Jin Dong’s characters started to wrestle each other and give each other back massages! 🧐🤣

The character interactions here are very stiff and formal. There was a lot more banter, light romance and humor in Draw the Line and that one was about judges!!!

It was a very red drama. I dropped it after 5 or 6 episodes so idk part 2 but it is the kind of in your face propaganda that can definitely put audiences off. Those were very tough times in general where no one was happy and bad stuff happened. I generally avoid that era for that reason.

Well people who are confident in their own values and ideology don’t have to feel threatened by others. That said, and to be fair China does make a lot of very red dramas that try to glorify the past tough times and depict people as very happy and patriotic despite the hardship which are difficult to watch. But those tend to be about the early 1930s to 1970:-1990s stuff and not the post 2000s dramas like this. They look like those ridiculous modern Chinese utopia art where everyone is round faced with red cheeks and glowing with happiness while they are engaged in hard labor. So there are the very pompous and off putting ones that give a bad impression as well. I like history a lot but I found for example the recent Hutong series to be completely unwatchable.

In that case better not watch this. It’s definitely propaganda and too dangerous you may get brainwashed by the CCP.

Well this is indeed very much a propaganda drama but I am not sure that is a pejorative term. After all Law and Order, NCIS,, Homeland, The West Wing, MASH, The Unit, VEEP etc are all propaganda dramas. Seems to me everyone makes them and they can be very popular. The most comparable American propaganda drama Law & Order ran for 20 years!
