Unfortunately iQiyi themselves hyped this as a brilliant ML NIF like drama in their Chinese promotional materials. The original novel title is not 云襄传 , it is 千门之门 which is often translated to The Secret Manual or Thousand Gates. It is a very sophisticated word play on multiple levels. 千门 literally is Thousand Gates but in this case means Qian 千sect. The Qian sect learn 千术 which literally is a thousand techniques but really means the art of deception, from its most basic form which is gambling to deeper business/military tactics. So maybe you remember The Shell Game/ King of Gambling the entire epic TVB series 千王之王 and its many hit spin-offs? 千王 means king of gamblers who wins by deception or trickery 出千. These are the ideas the Chinese novel title conveys, that Qian sect is the ultimate superior (duplicitous) sect. The English drama title of The Ingenious One is closer to the original novel title rather than a literal translation of the Chinese drama title 云襄传 or the Legend of Yunxiang. I am enjoying the drama but I totally understand why it is not meeting expectations in China.
