Yeah I didn't notice the ins and outs of the VIP for dramas I skipped but I know they used to be more generous in the past when ad revenues were still strong and investors more tolerant of losses. That's changed a lot and nowadays when they launch dramas that can't sell enough ad revenues they make it VIP only, especially when they are confident of content quality. Tencent actually sucked up most of the ad budgets for January/February with 3Body and then tried to even pull the express thing. They absolutely printed $$$ on 3Body but I hear iQiyi even knocked them out with The Knockout!

Without meaning to disrespect people who loved the books (and many did), the novelist is just not that good of a mystery writer. The books shine because of engaging and witty writing style and wow the writer is fabulous at characterisations and ahem... hinted relationships. But all the things a mystery fan looks for in plot and logic is not quite there. I understand why the production threw out or completely changed all of the cases. I would have finished reading the book if that part were better done because I did enjoy the writing quite a bit.

After the non-VIP airing was done, i.e., they fulfilled their ad obligations, they put the whole show onto VIP only. iQiyi is teetering on the edge of bankruptcy for the last 2 years and Baidu won't help them anymore. They can't afford to lose money on dramas anymore. The whole industry is going that way bc investors are no longer tolerating massive internet company losses to "buy market share".
