I only read about ~10-12 chapters of the book and skimmed the rest. The author has said other than the characters, it is not her work. The cases look completely different. And Lan Jue actually has an unexplained son that seemingly popped out of nowhere from his all-male household. 😂😂😂

Well considering HK just recognised same-sex marriage I wouldn't say China is supressing gay rights here. So far the main thing China seems to be hell bent on censoring in HK is anti Xi literature. The lack of content in this genre is mainly because it is just not interesting to most of mainstream HK. HK is a very small market so it doesn't make commercial sense to make movies or dramas that only a small fraction of a very small population (7mm people) have interest in. Half the HK population are expatriates who don't even watch Chinese productions, whatever the genre.

Yeah so this is a fictional dynasty but it looks like it was modelled on Tang Dynasty. And Wu Zetian was the first and only female emperor of China - she basically seized the throne from her son. The only other powerful Chinese regent was Empress Liu of Song Dynasty but the costumes here don't look Song.

Lol... yes the emperor... its just so weird he stands while the Dowager sits and behaves like he is her subject so I keep thinking he has not yet come of age. I wonder if she is supposed to be Wu Zetian. I keep thinking maybe she wasn't wiping out the entire village, maybe she really just meant to kill either Zhang Ping and/or his mom or Minister Lan. The only reason to do that is if one of them is a threat to her. Can't be the Lan family bc Lan Jue would also be toast. So must be Zhang Ping... Only reason is if the previous emperor is his father. Maybe that is why he and the emperor seem to have a strange bond.
