I think for the drama they may change that - a 5 year separation is gonna be super frustrating for viewers... esp if we are gonna have to watch grandma fake cry for 5 drama years/5+ episodes??? Tbh I wish they had kept it like the book in the sense that we are kept guessing until the end who she ends up with. Like Sound of the Desert. And just cast 3 more or less equivalent actors as the leads. My friend who read the book says that is one of the things she loved best about it - you didn't know who was gonna get the girl. And of course she spoiled me and told me the ending so I never read the book. I am still mad at her for it.

Luckily I don't get Disney vibes. Not a fan of Disney, never forgave them for changing the ending of The Little Mermaid. 😂😂😂

He's not bad husband material at all but he is so not for CSS. He is way too pompous and academic like seriously who cares the difference between a rhapsody and a poem??? I would have rolled my eyeballs so hard at that they would have gotten lost in my skull. Too boring... next please.

I can understand the niece thing. I have 60 first cousins. My mom is always nicer to all of them than she is to us. It is just good manners and to avoid the family saying she prefers/spoils her own kids. Plus to protect her daughter, she forced her niece's parents to divorce and booted out her mother. She must not look like after doing all that she is also abusing her niece or treating her less than the same, esp when her niece behaviour unlike her daughter's is perfectly correct. She is trying to show she is not like her sister-in-law.

I understand. Its just very unnatural for a mother to be like that and I don't think the writer needed to make her so extreme to explain why CSS is a guarded and difficult person.

Well her son-less sister-in-law was trying to lay claim to her son, whom she would have tried to brainwash and turn against his parents. So she left her daughter instead, whom her sister-in-law raised to be useless. Bc girls in those days are a waste of money. You feed, educate and raise them and then you got to pay someone to marry them (also known as dowry). It was a sucky situation. What is most unrealistic about it is that the grandmother, who allegedly loves her eldest son best aided and abetted her son-less daughter in law in abusing his only daughter. The mother's treatment of her is also not that realistically written. I can understand why she would be strict and try to get her to shape up but the coldness is not warranted.

I looked up the book reviews bc my friend recommended the novel to me some time back. I ended up not reading it bc said same friend spoiled who she ends up with. I guess for the drama its not a surprise bc of the casting.

Thx for this - I did watch a few episodes and then forgot about it. Maybe I will continue.

I think its quite disappointing that prose didn't really make it into the dialogue, which is actually quite modern. As one of my friends who did read the book said to me - Yikes - Tencent dumbed it down for the masses. I know it gets lost in translation anyway for most people. I think they probably did it to make it easier for the actors to speak their own lines.

Its so disappointing bc she was hilarious as Liu Dawei's mom in Ordinary Greatness.

I read some book reviews apparently this is consistent with her characterization in the novel. Many book readers don’t like the FL as well. I don’t have a strong view yet either way just pointing out they seem to be consistent in the portrayal.

No this is one of those where they filmed it all but it exceeded 40 episodes so it had to be broken into two parts. It is all done don't worry. Any delay is just "for show".
