No I don’t know if they fought in the novel. But BCF admitted to raping LC before he was killed by SMZ and WXS. Then somewhere in the next 4 volumes Lei Chun claims it was not BCF he just took the fall for someone else. But the novelist never revealed who that someone else was. Book readers were like WTF??? And why make a change like that later on and then just leave it open like that? He is writing can be very disorganized and contradictory. That is why he isn’t considered one of the top tier level Wuxia writers.
Now that we finally saw the ending, I can't figure out how the opening scenes in episode 1 fits in. WXS alone…
I think the ashes from the opening scene belong to both SMZ and BCF. As we see they were cremated together. Kind of wierd some netizens joked it was like a BL and the one that SMZ loved was BCF. And the rhyme was misleading bc Yang Wuxie didn’t die.

This is a famous line from an ancient Tang poem that means suicide by sword. I suspect most Chinese viewers already knew what Su Mengzhen meant to do when they heard this phrase. It was written by a famous general with a large army who held the enemy at bay at from three sides. After he was no longer needed or useful with his tasks achieved (peace at the border), he has no more purpose and commits suicide. That is why Yang Wuxie fulfills his wish and Wang Xiaoshi, Wen Rou and even poor Lei Chun accepted and understood his decision. It was a very fitting exit for Su Mengzhen.

Aww thx for your kind words. I thought your review was well written and hit all the important points. Its the only one I read bc I know you know your wuxia so I knew I could trust it. There are lots of idol actors in that and many reviewers evaluate a show pretty much based on whether their favorite actors are in it or not.
