Haha, hi great to see you here! I never studied the play, I have only read about it. From what I can tell, the gist of it is the part where Pan'er tricked Zhou She into returning Yinzhang's property and divorcing her. All of the other characters including Sanniang and Gu Qianfan are new characters that only exist in the adaptation so we don't know how this story ends.

Yups. Both The Bad Kids and The Long Night are higher rated.

Certainly - there are many famous courtesans in Chinese history like the Eight Beauties etc and folk stories about how enamoured scholars and noblemen were with them. They are mostly sad stories. The original is just one of many, but a famous one nonetheless.

Just curious, is the FL formerly a prostitute? yknow one that provides *sexual services*? from what i understand…
In the original play they were prostitutes. But the drama makes it clear they did not sell their bodies, they were just music entertainers. It doesn't change their fallen women status in society.

Rating going down 0.1 in douban😅 now 8.7
Gasp! That's terrible! Faints! 😂😂😂
In all seriousness its not going to be easy for the final rating to stay at such high levels, esp as more people watch. Anything over 8.0 on Douban is IMHO already fabulous. We can just enjoy the show and not worry about it.

So, FL is the daughter of a merchant who got prosecuted, right? I mean, I saw some speculation that mentioned…
Yeah I agree that the exonerated route seems tired and done before and this drama so far seems to go for a fresh approach so let's see how they fix this. Truth is I don't think that her social status technically prevents him from marrying her, it is just that she can only be a concubine. But if he never takes another wife, she becomes by default the main wife. The emperor can also promote her on her own merit from her own accomplishments so that is another way out for them. He sounds like a pretty liberal fellow, his empress was previously married and somehow they swung it so I think they will probably be able to do it. But I share your view that hopefully they are more original with how they go about it.

1 billion viewers in 7 days. Lol I can see a lot of today's traffic actresses (and actors) fans being jealous
That's alright as much as we and many others are enjoying this, not everyone is going to feel the same way. The drama is getting so much praise that it can weather a few critical or envious comments. Hopefully everyone remembers that and keeps the thread a safe place for people to express their views regardless of whether we agree.

On a separate note I simply cannot believe for once MDL's rating is below Douban. Almost never happens...

Can someone explain to me what is so bad about the pariah status? When it was mentioned in the beginning, I thought…
In the original play that the adaptation was based on, they were prostitutes. The drama is more puritanical and clarifies that they never sold their bodies. Nonetheless they entertain men for a living during a time when a noble lady had to join a nunnery after being rescued from falling in the river and everyone could see her clothes clinging to her form.

Yeah actually it’s kind of strange but some of the best romance actors are all happily married dudes… Mark Chao, Chen Xiao, Luo Jin and even Ren Jialun if his wife would let him.

Disney's mulan was released last year it's her latest movie. Idk why they didn't write it on her MDL page, maybe…
Yeah I always felt if Disney wanted to recreate the Mulan story that would appeal to Chinese audiences they should have hired a Chinese director and/or screenwriter to do it and not a bunch of people who don’t understand the concept of qi and inner power but want to try to use it. It may have worked 50 years ago in the golden age of Disney when China was closed but not today. Glad Liu Yifei has turned her focus to working with productions that understand China the way it should be understood.

Awesome FL, perfect dubbing (not too cutesy), awesome cinematography & editing, and kind of my cup of tea... so…
Most of it is recorded onset. That is why LYF sounds so soft spoken and the acting looks so natural. Dubbing makes everyone over loud.

tencent needs to stop spoiling all the couple moments in previews because it makes the actual viewing more underwhelming.…
I don’t watch previews for that reason. It’s not just Tencent they tend to spoil the coming episode highlights for most dramas and I find that very anticlimactic. I prefer to just skip them.

Yes the MDL database excludes Western dramas which is what Mulan is considered. It had nice locations but it wasn’t a great drama tbh.

That’s true! Some of the scholar phrases cracked me up!
People had too much time on their hands in the past and no internet. 😂

His wife is very lovely but I have to admit her acting is only passable and she was kind of mis-cast as Xiao Nongnu. In any case clearly she is his Xiao Nongnu so that is all that matters.
