Yeah well not to get sidetracked on a different drama but I just didn't have as much a problem as you did with the FL. I actually found their interactions quite funny. In any case, SSS was not a romance whereas this one definitely is so the pairing is more critical here. To me SSS is comparable to Heroes where the girl is not important and shouldn't be a deciding factor in whether to watch.

You must mean the term 贱籍/jian ji which I guess they are translating as pariah. You could also use untouchable which means the same thing. They exist outside of the four social classes of scholars, farmers, workers and merchants and are practically slaves, prostitutes or fallen people below commoner status. As you may know in the original play they are prostitutes but the drama adaptation makes clear they are just musicians or entertainers who don't sell their bodies. I guess you could also use the word coquettes to describe them. Nonetheless they are considered not suitable for marriage into the gentry or anyone who marries them can only be as concubines not proper wives.
