Lol just curious, how was she loud, rude, and narcissistic? I feel like we watched a completely different drama.
She's loud because she's constantly shouting, rude because she swears and issues threats and narcissistic because she lacks empathy and treats others with contempt. Honestly, in my view her personality is awful.
I only watched 4 episodes of this drama (so I have not read your article since I don't want to encounter any spoilers). The plot is not a masterpiece but it's interesting.
The problem is the obnoxious, loud, rude and narcissistic female lead. I will watch some more episodes and then decide whether to drop it or keep watching.
Thanks for your article anyway. I promise to read it once I've finished or dropped the drama.
I really loved the live action movie. The J-drama was good but not great. The Netflix remake was absolutely terrible in all respects, it wasn't even good as a parody.
this drama makes me feel uncomfortable. the fact that she has feelings for a 15 year old is gross
The synopsis made me cringe when I first read it. I gave it a chance and now it's my favorite J-drama ever. Don't judge a book by its cover... and don't judge a drama by its synopsis. ^^
I loved this drama from A to Z, yet I agree with you that this drama had some inconsistencies. The drama is still great and enjoyable. I gave it a 9 and not a higher score due to the aforementioned inconsistencies.
If only I can rate it a 0 ????. Don't bother..the drama is the worst of all ..even worse than The heirs. Any unbiased…
And "unbiased" and "reasonable" opinions are those similar to yours. Nice! I respect you didn't like the drama (or The Heirs, which I loved), and I agree some scenes lacked logic and believability, but I don't think my opinion is biased or unreasonable just because I liked the drama.
I have just watched the finale and I am really overwhelmed, so I will just write a relatively short comment. I will probably write a review soon.
Yes! Justice got served and the Imperial Family finally paid for their crimes. I am happy for that. Yet, I am also deeply saddened at the abolition of the Empire. That was, in my view, a terrible mistake.
Oh Sunny should have stayed as the Empress, and Ari as the Crown Princess. Yes, Korea in that alternate universe didn't necessarily need an imperial family, but it could have benefited greatly from it.
Oh Sunny could have been a great moral driving force for the nation, and Ari is very talented kid with a lot of potential. They could have done a great service to the nation, moderating and arbitrating the regular functioning of the institutions, and assuming the highest representation.
Yes, in the end Ari is happily living as a normal kid with Oh Sunny. But she has a lot of talent that will now be wasted (she's even leaving exams blank!). She belonged to the palace, that was her natural place. She has also lost her characteristic elegance and manners.
Above all, I enjoyed this drama a lot. 'The Last Empress' will remain as one of my favorite dramas ever. I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did.
gays existing in independent korean cinema has nothing to do with how conservative they still are.
Do you really believe is it ok to scornfully mock a country for being conservative? I am sorry for being so blunt, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with being conservative. There is indeed a problem when basic human or civil rights (such as equality) are not respected as a result. The West is currently going through decadence and a deep moral crisis. I honestly don't believe we have any moral authority, let alone superiority, to lecture or scold Koreans for being conservative.
I am 100% sure you didn't mean to be rude, though. In the case I misunderstood your comment, I would be very grateful if you explained to me what you meant. Last but not least, please don't get me wrong, I believe there are many things that should change in Korea right now.
When people talk to me about American TV series, I always reply that "I only watch Korean dramas". You should see their faces!

Can't wait for this drama!

Haraguchi-san is really obnoxious. I cannot really fathom how could Kawai get to like a woman like her.
Nice article, thank you! ^^
Thank you very much. ^^
She was outstanding in Chugakusei Nikki.
Good article, thanks! ^^
Amazing article. Thank you! ^^
