I think it is because the FL's mother think XQ should have a certain lifestyle, a lifestyle which apparently she can't afford even with her own current salary, let alone a firefighter. But what a mother thinks a daughter should have for a lifestyle for the mothers image (because that is what's going on, I think), is not necessarily the same as what the daughter thinks and feels. Like you said, the FL isn't a high maintenance person at all. I feel it's all because the mother wants to keep up appearance, sorta speak.

BJT's character really is different from his character in YAMH, and I love it! It's great that he can show his variety of acting skills through this.
