I loved this in the same way I loved 'Love Is More Than A Word' except the content of the story, production value and acting runs circles around 'Love Is More Than A Word'. This is a classic Chinese BL that is thrilling and funny while being SUPER (though not overtly) romantic. The lead couple's chemistry really can't be topped. If you think it lags the first couple of episodes, it's ok. Hang in there! It gets better!

With this being one of the ones you dropped, I'm interested in knowing one's you've rewatched.

If you don't see a Cdrama picking up until after the 30th episode, then I feel like you may simply be missing the point of the story that's going on for the first 29 episodes. Maybe the subtlety? lol Anyway, this drama saw success because it was a good story. We had an "average-looking" female lead with an actual cause that was starkly different to other palace dramas with "pretty" leads essentially lying (you can take that with both meanings of the word) their way to the position of empress.

Not sure how used to C-dramas you are, but they tend to pick up closer to the 10th episode, generally.

To me, I think Hong Rim was in a really bitter/angry mood when he said that...especially after the king essentially tricked him into thinking that he had killed the queen. It's really hard for me to accept or even believe that Hong Rim really loved the queen though.

I'm at episode 32, which was INTENSE, and I don't want it to end. This show's so good.

TOTALLY agree. Every time they have arguments about who's to blame for things, I'm just thinking to myself, "Actually, if the Heavenly Empress just wasn't a complete witch, we wouldn't be having this problem." So much for the God of War, but Runyu is "scheming" for having common sense.

This was a good drama and tear-jerking at some parts. Really good music too.

56 episodes in and I'm at full 'what-the-hell-is-going-on' mode. I've been told this ends happily, but I don't see how that's gonna happen...and tbqh if this "happiness" doesn't include Runyu, I'm gonna be pissed. lol

So homosexual that can't get it up for girls, yes.

Well executed, great comedic timing, handsome actors, beautiful actresses and great on screen chemistry. While I guess this could be categorized as “bromance”, in my gay eyes, it’s just the beginning of a deep romance between the characters. I had a really good time watching this and the episodes are all super short. All 15 can be finished within an hour and a half.

I’m kinda willing to just watch it for him too. Let us know what you think.

Cried multiple times during this series. I loved everything about about except for the flashbacks and two guard “sidekicks”. Highly recommend.

If you have a low tolerance for series over 40 episodes, then I wonder how you would even find yourself interested in (much less actually attempt watching) an historical palace drama...and a Chinese historical palace drama, at that. 60-70 episodes is the average for this kind of thing.

I really, really, really hope this gets a second season. It totally deserves it.

I really beg forgiveness from the BL gods or not watching this sooner. I'm on episode 12 so far and I'm absolutely loving Rambo and Pree. Their relationship is much more realistic of young gay men than is the relationship of Pop and Oat. That's not to take away from Pop and Oat's thing because we all love good old fashioned BL here, but to have somewhat of a realistic contrast within the same show nice, if a little (seemingly) disjointed sometimes.
